Hi everyone. I will obtain my CDL in the nearest future. There is a possibility for me to start with transporting cars (I have friends in industry who are ready to help me to get into it). Shold I go ahead and start my career with this or it's too risky for a newbie to haul such an expensive load? Also, what are the good and bad sides of transporting cars comparing to other cargos? Any info will help, thanks!

As with any freight, treat those cars as if they were yours.I hauled exoctic cars and it was challenging. You have to be extra carful compared to general freight.

I have never hauled cars.. but, I see them and they are always checking their load.. climbing up to check all the cars on top, making sure the chains are tight and such..

A few weeks back.. a reefer pulled into a truckstop.. and was rolling along the front of a row of trucks and his trailer hit the rear bumper of the car on top of the car hauler.. then he made it worse trying to back out of.. anyway, there was some damage to the brand new car.. and the car hauler was not at all happy..

I stayed in my truck cause it looked like thngs could get ugly..

Yes you can haul cars as a newbie. United road and precision motor transport or something like that name can hire you. It is a pain. You have to document every car and not all damage preferably with pictures. But you can make more money and get a good local job later on. As an o/o insurance will be high and a main concern. A little scratch may make the car a write off for some.

Doesn't matter if you start out hauling cars or get 1-5 years hauling vans before cars. Bottom line is you're going to have to learn how to eventually. I'd take the job if you can get it!

Well let me put it this way. Hauling cars is not rocket science, but you need a level head on your shoulders. You also need a great deal of mechanical ability and the ability to visualize how a respective unit will fit in a particular position on the truck. If you can work out of a terminal where they haul pretty much the same units all the time it is easier to learn, like all small cars or all midsize cars, or all trucks. Where it is hard to learn is when you have loads of mixed units. It can be done by a newbe but it is tough. Some of the big UNION carriers, like Cassens will hire new graduates, I know of it happening several times. Just so you know I know what I'm talking about I will let you know that the last 25 years before I started drawing my Teamster pension of 32 years I hauled cars so I do have a little car haul experience and I can tell you it was the best job I ever had, made the most money ever And until I learned how to haul cars it was the hardest job I ever had, and I already had been driving for 11 years when I started car haul. With all that said if the description fits you I wish you good luck and be very careful. You can not only damage cars but you can get hurt or killed in a heart beat, very very dangerous job and very very hard on your body, just ask my Doctors.
