If someone asks for a price "to help them out" you price it the same as any other time.
And if they cry "Billy does it for $xxxx match his price!" Call billy then.

Friends is friends; business is business.
I got friends I do business with. Feelings get checked at the door.

Another thing is he hasn’t been able to get me the trailer registration, or copy of the annual inspection (the sticker is current) to carry in case I get stopped by the DOT. He says the O/O has it, and the O/O says another guy has it. I’m assuming not having those papers would be a citation at best, or an OOS at worst?

It's enough to say you're not hauling his junk at a junk rate at least till you have those, and then hope he doesn't come up with them.

We do some charity trucking occasionally... hauling donated materials for Habitat For Humanity, a local Boy Scout Camp, a historical renovation... things like that. We usually donate a couple of trailers for parade floats on 4th of July. That's just part of living in a small town and being a part of that town.
But when it comes to doing "favors" for somebody that wants hauling done cheap we almost never do it. It's usually a friend of a friend of some local hustler who heard about our charitable work and figures he can tag onto that. As in "Hey Terry, can you get me some loads of base rock for my driveway ( at his 4800 sq ft. custom built house) for the same price you got it for the Habitat project?"
My answer is always the same..."When you start doing charitable work you get the charitable price. Until then you pay full boat, just like everybody else. I run a business and I like to run it at a profit. And if that doesn't suit you I'll bring it up at the next Elks or Rotary meeting for everybody to hear what a two-bit chisler you tend to be when the money is coming out of your pocket.".
    They usually only ask once.

Many many years ago my dad had an Excavating business. And he had this friend that was kind of a shady character, always looking for favors and that sort of thing.

Well he sent one of his Shady friends over to my dad. He he said that he was building this building but he didn't have any money for the Excavating so he wanted my dad to donate his time and take his track loader and do all of the Excavating and backfilling and Grading.

So my dad looked at him, and he said sure I'll do that no problem. All I need for you to do is replace my tracks on my machine and my sprockets, idlers, and rollers.

Well the guy was excited he thought that was a great deal. Then he came back a few days later really really angry. He said to my father how can you expect me to pay for all that- that cost over $10,000! (and that was back in the 70s)

So my dad said well if you don't pay for my tracks then I'll have to pay for my tracks. And if I have to pay for my tracks and then I need to go to work somewhere that pays me so that I can afford to pay for my tracks...

Unless you would like to pay for my tracks, and then I'll be glad to come and do your job.

With that the guy took off pissed off like an ex-wife.

It's the same with trucks or any business that you have equipment. You can't do big favors for people because eventually you have to pay for those repairs and you have to pay for that insurance and you need to go earn a living so that you can do that.

So next time somebody asks you to do a favor that's a friend, just say sure I'll do it for $1.50 a mile.

Just buy me a set of steer tires and we'll be all set. Or Turbo or radiator or ask him to just make your insurance payment for this month or whatever will make their eyeballs pop out and never bother you again.

It cost people nothing to cost you money, if you let them. Not to mention if you had a DOT problem, that favor would have really cost you.

    gokiddogo and Gumper Thank this.
