Hey all -
Asking for a friend who has a spare tractor due to a trailer being down for maintenance for a while.
He is not very computer literate, so I'm his 'interpreter'.
Has anyone done any power-only hauling for trailer manufacturers? My friend has Utility in mind, since there are two Utility dealerships here in NJ not too far for him to pull to. He's wondering how to get in contact with them, how it pays (and especially if they will pay for dead head miles to run down to their Virginia manufacturing facilities), and any other information y'all might have to offer.
Basically, he's wondering if he should let the tractor sit, or do something with it while waiting for his reefer to come back online. I guess if anyone has any other power only/tow away ideas that might keep the rig working and put some money in his pocket, he'd be glad to hear them too.
Thanks in advance.

no they won't pay deadhead and it's not a great rate either. I think we used to haul Utility out of salt lake city for like $1.25 mile.to WI thi was just last year by the way. There is companies out there that specialze in power only. companies like trailer transport.
we were hauling medical scanners out and we'd pick up a triler to transport back. Considering we were already getting paid both directions for the scanner delivery it was just a little something extra for us. Usually you don't see nice trucks doing this work if it tells you anythingWings2Wheels Thanks this. -
Thanks for the reply.
My buddy was able to get a relatively quick response from Utility via phone.
Unfortunately, it's not worth him pulling the tractor out of the yard for this one.
MedicineMan, you're right on target. They are offering $1.70/mile WITH fuel surcharge. Nothing for dead heading to the location (surprise surprise).
I must say, they got back to my buddy right quick, which is more than he can say for most.
Thanks again for the info. -
I know they would have allowed us to use the trailer to haul a load back but then pad a little less per mile. I also don't know if that was a deal through the dealer we were hauling them to or if it was utility

Wings2Wheels Thanks this.

Matter of fact, if it were me, I would take a look and see what Schneider has for power only to get him close to the Utility plant and then take that $1.70 to bring an empty trailer back. $1.70 isn't a TERRIBLE rate for an empty trailer considering the considerably lower fuel expenses.
Wings2Wheels and Working Class Patriot Thank this. -
oh by the way, the way most the trailer transport companies do this is by hauling them as doubles
-
I worked at XL specialized for three years...
there were some nice tractors hauling our trailers all over... but the bottom line was we only paid what we had too...
they all went out stacked double and often triple...
and no deadhead.
meaning its a fill-in gig and definately not dedicated.
as a matter of fact if it were cheaper, we'd send our own driver... so that ought to tell the whole story right there. -
Wings2Wheels Thanks this.

I will definitely bring this to his attention. If anyone has a good contact for Schneider's Power Only/Towaway loads, I'll pass it on to him. Thanks in advance, and believe me, he appreciates everyone's input a lot more than you can imagine.
He is amazed at what can be found on this new-fangled interwebs thing.
