We had a company guy doing work for a terminal that was shutting out the union by 'atrition' and knew we were bringing in an owner owner operator.

First week we ran a company unit from a hotel.

All the union guys would swap around to give him all of their worst stops and on friday just as I was going home he calls in saying he just dropped the leaded regular into the no-lead. and I'm off with the theif to drive 70 miles and spend the night pumping out the un-leaded tank.

At least we had a pump on that old brockway.....

Each truck was scheduled to do 7 stops a day around the philadelphia ;burbs.

6 months later is was all owner operators, they all took their retirements early.

 

Doing 6 loads a shift was easy with Shell. 15 minutes gate to gate loading.They usually had two regular tanks so you could unload in 25 minutes. We were given 45 minutes to load and 45 minutes to unload. Any time you shaved off that you kept as a bonus. About 45 minutes per load equates to about $110 extra pay a shift. They had a computer that you were able to look up the Veeder root at stations. If the station had enough fuel and traffic was bad then you'd skip it till later and do a station that would not hold you up. We also traded stations so if I had a Gilroy load I'd give it to a Gilroy driver as a go-home and I'd do his SJ.
Our team was named best in the country by Shell. About a month later we lost the contract to a lower bid. They ran out a few stations and the computer was taken away, loads had to be done as assigned and in order. No trades. And they could only do 5 loads instead of 6. But the drivers were fine with that because their company didn't pay a load bonus, only hourly.

 

They knew more than ppl thought, alot of tankers were turned in to Swiss cheese. But the driver was spared, they were trying to stop the fuel from making it where it needed to go.
