Well I'm doing a load of n-butyl from NJ to Pennsylvania coming from the port in one of those iso tankers it doesn't have any hazmat plates and the GPS is sending me thru the pa turnpike and I'm afraid of hauling it thru it and get in trouble, I looked online and does not seem to have any of the placards I have seem before. If anyone has hauled it before or have experience with hauling stuff from the port without placards let me know.. thanks

Prepare for a massive fine if you get caught now or later during a audit.
Better go around and stay legal.

I would call someone and find out before I moved it. Big time fine and OOS if placards are needed and not on there.

Check your paperwork for the UN or NA number. Shipper is supposed to supply the placards.

Is the product N-butyl alcohol, or N-butyl acetate?
    . . . . . . . . .
Doesn't matter. Both are flammable, UN 1123, PGII.

Get a reroute. Don't go through the tunnels on the PA Turnpike. Also, don't use the reroute around the Lehigh Tunnel. I t takes you on a twisty road that only straightens out long enough about 6 times for "14% grade next 1/4 mile". Then you come to a 20 ton bridge. Don't ask me how I know.....

Also, butyl acetate is one of the chemicals in the "distress" scent of honey bees. So don't get any on ya....

References: NAERG; wikipedia for the honey bee factoid; CAS for the shipping info. Good luck.

I googled n-butyl and it said UN2485. If you need placards and don't have them = fine and oos. I would call someone who would know.

......And DO NOT move it until there's placards on it. None of this "Oh, just swing by a truck stop and pick some up" s--t. They have to come to you. You can not legally move that load ANYWHERE without placards, and don't let them tell you different. Call dispatch and if they give you any answer besides "We're on the way with some placards", call your safety department.

Yeah, that's n-butyl isocyanate, which is VERY nasty per NAERG. Get on the phone and kick the decision upstairs, ruckie.

You're getting some good advice so far. I'll add to it...don't move that stuff. Not anywhere. If they can't supply you with a proper haz-mat manifest and placards refuse the load.

If you get pulled over with out placards. Its 250 to 2500 per side of trailer, where it's wrong.

1-800 WARN DEP will get you a lot of help...you don't want that unless you really NEED ti!

Did you get the Material Safety Data Sheet?

It will tell you the HM info -or- tell you it is "not regulated"

Do your papers indicate this is a haz mat?

Is there an X in the HM column or an RQ?

Does the description start with a UN NUMBER?

n-butyl is a descriptive chemistry term, what is it describing; it may not be hazardous...
