When I was OTR I would ALWAYS ask the manager if I could park there for my 10 hour break no matter if there was a no truck parking sign or not. The only time I was told no was in Los Lumas, NM and they actually said that I could but I had to move the truck every 2 (or 3?) hours. Just wasnt worth it so I drove a few miles to the Hard Rock Casino.

I have a question about the gladhand. If it was removed, wouldnt it have to be replaced by a mechanic that is certified in airbrakes? How about the removal? Would someone have to be airbrake certified to remove a gladhand?

I can only speak for Texas, but signs have to be posted before a tow company can do a tow away. State law says that if the tow truck is completely hooked up to your vehicle but the tow truck hasnt moved at all and you approach the tow truck and tell him to uncouple your vehicle, he is required by law to do so and can not charge you a penny.

The tow company that I worked for had 2 or 3 stores that called us for tow aways. It was rare that they called though. But the guys that did the tow aways were told to get the vehicle moved as quickly as possible even if it was only a foot forward so that they could collect the fee. I cant say for sure, but I dont think that they were able to collect the fee on the spot. Im thinking that it had to be towed to impound yard.

If the signs are in place, the tow companies have the right to "cruise" the parking lot looking for violators.

See if the state has a department that regulates towing. In Texas it's Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR). If that state does, make a formal complaint. The tow company wont like that a bit. It could cost them fines and possibly lose their permits to tow.

Yep DOT shut me down once for a nick in the line and they said anything requiring repair on brakes must be done be a certified air brake repair guy.

IF this actually happened I believe someone here was parked a bit more than 5 minutes. Maybe a 10 hour break. I call BS on most if not all of his story though.

What was to stop the perps from just unhooking the glad hand and showing you another one,did the driver get out and verify it was actually the glad hand and not another, also, they could put a lock on the trailer. Given the time frame the OP gave us, they probably watched them drive in and scammed them immediately before they got away. I look for signs before even shopping at a Wal-mart, anymore.

Sounds to me like the local yokels were in on it, and it being privately owned, although that is subject to scrutiny as well, the state police would probably decline being involved.

Many Wal-marts are set up so they never own the land and only lease the building which was built by someone else, thus avoiding another pitfall local businesses face, that being taxed exorbitantly on commercial property.

I think we need Paul Harvey here so we can get the rest of the story. 5 minutes? I read the whole thread and maybe I missed it, but was their lot posted with no parking signs?
