I recently left my job of 6 years because there was a possibility that I would be let go do to an argument with a coworker who wasn't doing their job. I'm now working under the table for my room-mate and his dad laying carpet. I've been wanting to get into trucking for a while now and well, I think now is the time to jump forward. I've been working on my weight and blood pressure to be able to pass the DOT physical.

The thing is, I'm flat broke now. and the money I make laying carpet is nothing compared to my old hospital job. I was curious if there are any type of grants, and how I would be able to obtain one, for the CDL school. I cashed my pension out, which is a reasonable $7700 that I'll be getting back, but will be another month or two, maybe longer, before I get it. Should I try and get a grant or should I wait and use my pension to pay my own way through the CDL school.

I live inn southeastern Ohio, about 30 miles from downtown Columbus. Could any of you recommend a trucking school to go to that is decently price and actually teaches you properly how to drive truck? I've already got a company picked out that I'm going to try and get in with, TMC Transportation, though I'll still keep an eye out for more. A friend of a friend has driven with them for a couple years and highly recommends them, and said he'd try and put a word in for me. I've also thought about trying to get in with one of the big companies that train you themselves for 1-2 year work contracts. But the only companies I know of have some pretty ruffed up reputations.

What are the step by step moves that I need to make now that I'm 110% serious about getting into the industry?

If you get your CDL on your own by renting a truck and learning the basics, Maverick will hire you without having to graduate a CDL school, and we're flatbed just like TMC (unless you want to do refrigerated or glass which we also have).

I don't know exactly what TMC requires, but if they do require graduating a school, going with Maverick will save you several thousand dollars right off the bat, and there are very few companies who start out as high as Maverick does when it comes to pay.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions, or post your questions in the Maverick forum here:

Prime Inc. has flatbed division. No money needed for their school & they pay you $600.00 a week while riding with a trainer. You may have to sign a contract to work for them a year; in this economy, what's wrong with that? Keep your $7700.00 retirement fund in the bank; some day you will be glad you did.

I third that... Whatever company you choose, don't blow your money on CDL school, because you're not going to get anywhere near your money's worth. I'm $6,000 in debt for mine and they didn't teach me anything noteworthy, except Hours of service, which I could've learned on my own easily.

DES or department of economic services or something like that. I just know it as DES. You can get a grant through them. It will probably take a couple if months though. It's worth checking out

Millis transfer has its wn school called MTI. There are 4 training sites and one is Trenton OH. It's $2500 For MTI and you have to pay $ 500 up front and they finance the rest. Once you get driving, they deduct $20 a week from your pay. They also charge $2500 for the OTR training of 15000 miles (roughly 6-8 weeks) but if you work at Millis 1 year, they forgive that debt. Check Milis out, there is very little crap talked about them anywhere that I could find.
