I went through a truck driving program at a local community college 10 years ago, passed it and got my class A CDL license. Problem was, I was only 19 years old and couldn't find any company that would take me because of insurance. I ended up continuing college and working at a bank and hotel.

So now 10 years later, I'm looking for a truck driving job that offers training. Everyone wants 1-2 years experience in the last 3-5 years. I've even tried for some local work driving cement trucks, but I think they're rather nervous to hire and train me because I have no driving history. I did apply to a few of the major carriers to see what they offered, and got a response from a Swift recruiter that could set me up at an orientation. They have a school I could do but it's 3 weeks unpaid ;/

At the very least, I need a refresher and some hours behind the wheel. Are there any schools that offer like a thorough 5-7 day program (I could use a vacation week to attend)? Any recommendations to a newbie that can't get his foot in the door? Is OTR with a carrier and school the only way? I'd prefer local work but it doesn't look like it'll happen without going OTR.

    Food Service

You could have went with a Food Service company at 19, and they would have kept you Intrastate (meaning in state). Being 29 with a CDL, most of them STILL will take you, and train you. Gotta be willing to work though....those guys don't just steer a truck down the road.

    Never heard of the guy!

Wish I'd know about you 10 years ago; household goods movers hire 18 yrs. old cdl drivers for intrastate work.
Do you still have your CDL?
    Where is your location; city/state?
As @White Dog posted, food service companies hire drivers with either a cdl or cdl permit and you learn the rest OJT running teams with a trainer and helping him unload at stores, fast food joints, etc.
Here's some food service outfits that hire new drivers with a cdl or cdl permit. You must apply for "driver helper" or "driver associate" or whatever the company may call them.
    Sygma Network
    Reinhart Foodservice
    McLane Foodservice

Schneider might pay for a refresher then hire you. Their tanker division (Schneider Bulk) is the best and make about $60K - $65K the first year.

Roehl Transport pays a salary from day one of school. Only problem, the first paycheck is week #3, then I think you get all 3 weeks pay at once. Talk to a recruiter to be sure about this.

    Thanks

Yes, I still have my CDL A. I think I just need to do the DOT physical to get the interstate restriction removed as I haven't been an active driver.

    I'm located in Millsboro, Delaware.

I applied to Roehl a few weeks ago to see what they could do but haven't heard anything. As far as OTR goes, they have the closest terminal about 2 hours I think from where I live. Haven't tried Schneider yet. I will contact them.

For intrastate household goods moving, is that a lot of lifting furniture? If it's just boxes and stuff I could probably do it, but I can't see myself lifting heavy/bulky furniture. I'm not the strongest guy :(

I will look more into the food service companies. Sounds like a really good idea to get the experience as an assistant then eventually as a driver. Not sure if there's any local food service companies.

Have you renewed your medical card? Was that what your were referring to as a dot physical? If so you don't have a cdl

He has claimed "Excepted Intrastate" so he doesn't need a CDL to drive in a few limited jobs. Like for a volunteer Fire dept and some farm types work. But he still has a cdl.

Abilene in Richmond VA will hire you. You will have to ride with a trainer for a few weeks until they cut you loose on your own. Training pay is between $75- $100 per day, flat rate paid whether the truck moves or not. It's not as much as you earn on mileage pay, but considerably more than you will get paid going though a refresher course at a school.

We have a NE fleet that will have you running through DE on a regular basis, so you could conceivably swing by the house once a week or more.

I haven't renewed the medical card since I'm currently not driving. I'm probably going to soon as I'm looking for a driving position.

I applied to Reinhart, might try McLane soon too. The only issue with these companies are the distance. I live 2-4hrs away. I can't move, but can rent a room for a few hundred a month to sleep at when I work if the pay is enough.

Abilene looks like a good company to start in and new trucks to boot. I tried sending you a message but I don't have the minimum post count yet.
