Hey @Chinatown appreciate the links! I can head west just yet because I'm hanging back in the city to do some interviews/take some tests but it's on my mind. Thanks again.

Getting a Class B CDL is not a walk in the park. Getting a vehicle to test in is still a problem. Here is what I HIGHLY recommend you do. Stay away from the 26,000 vehicles and find a job driving a non-CDL vehicle. None of the driving is going to count toward the Class A experience even with a B anyway. Not sure what the hold up is getting in a school.

Can I rent a truck from Ryder and just take that to the test?

The hold up is that I was told the airfare to the school location would be paid and now I'm being told it won't. Also, I was told I could start next week and now I'm being told it'll be end of next month. So I'm looking for some alternate interim solutions to stay afloat and just test the water of being a driver for work.

In all likelihood I doubt it.

Care to elaborate? Is it a problem from the DMV's pov?

Usually not. Even class B trucks tend to be a bit more complicated to rent than a UHaul.
Plus there is the whole issue with driving it off the lot. You can't just drive to the testing center. A driver with the proper license has to drive the truck there.
And at least Penske checks for the correct license before renting the vehicle, or did last time I picked up a rental.

I see. I do have the CDL A permit though - which is why I posted the thread. Does that make a difference or do Ryder/Penske want the full license?

I'll call up a ryder nearby and see what they say. Thanks.
