America for most of its history has welcomed LEGAL immigration, and has flourished as a result of people making their way here to better their lives. These new arrivals have ALWAYS been looked down upon and treated poorly...crap wages, slums, etc...no matter where they were from. However, they worked hard, assimilated into our way of life, and in most cases passed on the possibility for their offspring to have a better life than they'd had.

The problem today is that we have ILLEGAL immigrants breaking the law to come here. They have no interest in assimilating into our way of life. Some are here to work a few years and go back with enough money to live well...others are here sending money back home to their family. I'm sure there are even some who'd like to stay here, but coming here illegally showing a blatant disregard for our laws from the start is a bad way to begin a new life here. They refuse to learn the language, cling to their old customs, fly their old country's flag, and insist that nobody act too "American" around them. It has got to the point where the 9th Circus Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling that stated AMERICAN students don't have the right to wear a t-shirt with an American flag printed on it at their Calif---ya school JUST because the day they wore it happened to be May 5th, which I guess is some sort of big deal in Mexico. News flash, Calif---ya is NOT Mexico. Sorry, but unless your school has uniforms or an official dress code prohibiting t-shirts, here in America a student should NEVER be told to remove a t-shirt showing American patriotism.

I have no issues with ANYONE that wants to come here LEGALLY and make a better life for themselves and their offspring. People who are here LEGALLY are going to be able to find work easily that pays at least the minimum wage, because since they are here LEGALLY, they can freely go to the Dept. of Labor and file a claim. ILLEGAL immigrants, on the other hand, are taken advantage of and payed far less, because they have no ability to file a claim without risking deportation. ILLEGALS working for these low wages make it harder for legal residents and citizens alike to find good paying jobs because why would an employer want to pay 1 person who is legally able to work $20/hr plus all of the payroll taxes when he can hire 3 or 4 illegals to do the same job for less out-of-pocket expense? So for the fleet owner, why pay an American driver $.35/mile if he can find an illegal immigrant driver to drive the SAME truck, hauling the SAME freight, for $.15/mile? In some cases, that illegal immigrant driver might even have more behind-the-wheel experience than the American, if that's what that driver did in their old country.

So yeah, immigration has always played a role in the economic well-being of this country...but not all immigrants are equal. Come here legally, assimilate into the "melting pot", and we'll welcome you with open arms. If, however, you show disrespect for our laws by coming here illegally, disrespect our way of life by clinging to your old ways and refusing to assimilate (or even just learning the language), well let's just say that you'll have a little tougher time finding people who want you here.

For all the whiners out there that say trucking is a horrible job that pays slave wages .
Show me how to make a better living with a 10th grade education that is legal .

Dollar for dollar you won't make more money with less school debt than you will in trucking .

All the crying and moaning about how bad trucking is all bull crap plain and simple .
If you don't like the pay get the heck out of the way so a man that wants to earn a living can get in and get it done.

Nobody is holding a gun to your head to make you drive !!
Man up shut and get to doing what you agreed to do when they hired you !
They told you up front what the job payed so it is no surprise what your check is .

Man it gets so old listing to grown men whine like a little kid that is not getting its way .
The only job an immigrant is taking from you is the one you are to lazy to do or the one you think you are to good to do .

The answer to the original question is this ...If you are a good driver with a clean record you will never be without a job in trucking unless you want to be .

OK I am done ranting for now have a great day and be safe out there .

Pedigreed Bulldog and Marmonman both made excellent points stated well. Nothing I can think of to add to either.

I gotta disagree with you on one thing... I've been to California a few times since I've started driving this year. It is Mexico.

Going West in this country is like a slow fade from America to Mexico, lol.

Delivering food to Dulles airport in Washington D.C is a challenge to find someone speaking English.

Low wages are caused but the people who accept the low wages and then complain that they don't make any money. There are good paying trucking jobs, find one and stop complaining. If people refused to work for low wages the bottom feeder companies would have to pay more. But it won't happen because someone will always accept the crap pay then complain about it

Ever been unemployed??? Not even one minute since my first job in trucking. When I have changed jobs it was due to one company buying out another company soooo on Friday I worked for company A ... on Monday it was for company B ... same job basically and sometimes even the same equipment since it was merely a buyout or merger. Companies may buy and sell each other out but one thing they don't want is to lose their customer base ... so no matter what is going on with the trucking companies themselves, the work must go on to maintain the happiness of the customer. Luckily, each buyout or merger has resulted in higher compensation and benefits and each company has taken into consideration the time and experience on the job. I would not be in too good a shape had I bounced from one job to the next.
