Your concerns are valid IMO. It is disconcerting that so much important data pertaining to such important operational info is kept by 3rd parties now.

Here are some ways to control and mitigate risk in this modern ELD age:

    1) Use an ELD provider that has multiple data centers in different physical states. In other words, if they have data centers in Texas and Nevada, then one of those places can burn to the ground and your data is still in tact.

    2) Download your logs as a pdf file for your records or at least have them emailed to you periodically. Do this once per month for example. Do the same for your state miles. In this manner, even if all of the data gets jacked, you will have unedited hard copies. Many ELD makers will only store your log for the minimum 6 months required by law and then it's deleted. If you want it longer than that, then make sure that you are getting PDF copies for yourself if you want them longer tan 6 months (for taxes or whatever.)

    3) If ANYONE edits your logs - even certified logs - THAT LOG GETS KICKED BACK TO YOU to "confirm or reject" the edit. If they edited one particular day 10 times, then you have to confirm it 10 times. If their ELD does not do this then it is not a compliant system. If they are somehow skirting around this system and making such edits without your approval on purpose, then they are looking at up to $24,000 in fines per incident if that fact was to magically get "disclosed."
