    My only advise is to learn your speeds for each gear.... IE: 1st-3mph, 2nd -6mph, 3rd - 9 mph, 4th - 12 mph, 5th - 15 mph, 6th - 20 mph, 7th - 25 mph, 8th - 35 mph, 9th - 45mph. 10th- 55+ mph. Most new drivers try to downshift before the proper speed and RPM and end up grinding gears. RPM's down to 1000, clutch, 1500 RPM's, clutch, Gear. Unless your skip shifting...then rpms down to 800.

I had a funny instructor....he would also say.... upshifting - Left Foot, Left Foot, Floor ......downshifting - Left Foot, Right Foot, Left Foot, Floor...hahaha!!! He would also make us say....what gear I'm in...and what gear I'm going to. It worked!!

If you have the typical 10 speed Fuller Eaton, downshift by your speed primarily, Remember 45, 35, 25, 15... 4+5 = 9, when you drop below 45 downshift to 9th, 3+5 = 8 when you drop below 35 down shift to 8th, 2+5 = 7 so below 25 to 7th and 1+5=6 so below 15 to sixth... when coming to s top, stop in sixth, go to neutral drop the range selector and go back to 2nd 3rd ir 4th which ever you are starting in... Climbing you should be able to pull most any mountain in hi range so 6th should be the lowest you need to down shift to.

Oh, and yes you do need to raise the RPMs to 1400 - 1500 when you down shift, those speeds are only for when to come out of gear, have to give the throttle a little nudge when going into the lower gear.

Good Luck and have a little faith man, you'll get it... its a rhythm is all... Up shift is clutch neutral clutch gear, down shift clutch neutral rev clutch gear... anyway once you have your CDL and hit the road with a trainer you will learn to float, that just means you won't be using the clutch, the shifting part and road speed, engine speed all that stays the same, just no clutch so concentrate on getting you downshift speeds and reving to the right RPM to go back into gear and you'll be fine.

    Have a little faith.
