Hey OPUS 7,it was an upper for an AR-15.thank you so much for your reply .i wish i was out south to, because just like your saying i would have nothing to worry about when it comes to unnecessary gun laws which would be great.Yes i am definitely in the wrong state no doubt for enjoying guns as a hobby, they are way overly strict and most of the laws pertaining to guns out here are really unnecessary .I am a good person and a responsable and safe shooter as a hobby, not at all a threat to society like you mentioned(thank-you) which is why i am at a loss here. I've made a simple mistake that is reeking havoc on my chances to approve with a trucking company,i take the blame for my actions thinking it was ok to buy because of the price, but only in California would this have happened.i am really glad i came here for good advice and pointers, this forum is really nice.

Also it isn't important to the issue unless you tell them your charge was a felony. YOU were charged with a misdemeanor, the court gave you a sentence but it shouldn't even show up on a normal background check, felonies do.

@ Ridgeline, the DA told me that even if it is a private party sale ,the item has to be brought to a dealer ,the serial numbers ran(clear the 10 day backround check) then the sale /purchase has to be made inside the gun store of choice after they sign off that it is a clean not stolen item and like you said they can't be a felon. I am only going off of what the DA told me at my court hearing. i should have explained all this in more detail in my first post, sorry about that. The DA and judge really hammered me hard about how i was supposed to make the purchase and how irresponsable it was of me. This all happened in upper northern California where they are extra strict.I believe what your saying is true but the laws must be slightly different in the particular city i am in .As far as experience goes ,no doubt your right, i need to obtain at least 1 year or more before most companies will consider me.But i have applied at mostly companies that hire truck school graduates, even though i have not attended and graduated they ask for an app to be filled out and turned in to see if you are the type of person they "might consider" after trucking school is completed, once i graduate i may have more choices possably.I am just now finding out that most of the mega carriers are very simalar in that they hate to see any recent criminal history within 3 years or more of the application date.So i am somewhat limited as to who i can apply with after school .I have a tough road ahead of me ,i realize the trucking industry is very strict, and is made of many highly skilled drivers who have many years of experience .I am just here for good advice from experienced drivers and to see what carriers i may have a chance with after i graduate and which ones would probably never consider me based on this misdemeanor being somewhat fresh, only 10 months old.

So here is my advice, listen carefully.
First thing is the school, I would look at others for the reason I stated. If they have a program for placement or jobs, ask them "why are you requiring a pre-hire letter when you are supposed to do that job for me? " I think this is one huge problem with our industry and the training new drivers should be getting, but the accepted practice is a school is to train you to pass the CDL while the company trains you for the job - truthfully, I don't think company training is anywhere close to where it should be and a lot of the time it is crap driver that comes out of it because they learn the "trainers" bad habits.
second thing is that the year or more is BS. a lot of companies will hire you if you apply. This is to discourage people but the truth is most will hire new grads. How many companies have you applied to? 30 or 50? Make a list of companies, put the date you applied to them and a few days later check on the application.
third thing is that this isn't a very strict industry, believe me it isn't no where near of what it should be. I worked in a couple where they were strict, this isn't.
Fourth is if you want to actually be a professional, learn as much as you can, starting with the CDL manual you have from the state. Learn it, cover to cover, and then get your temp permits on your own. Learn about logging, learn about how the truck works (OK you said you were good at diesel mechanics) so you can do a good proper pretrip. THEN worry about school.Jrdude5 Thanks this. -
Hey Ridgeline ,i really appreciate your advice on this whole issue,it sounds like you have been driving for a while. i totally agree with you when you said the company is where i will get the experience, your totally right.i am glad that by the sounds of what you have said ,i may have a chance even without the school for a potential employer to hire me reguardless. i am really going to try harder because i already have my CDL which eliminates one step out of the equation ,all i need is real seat time which of course equals real experience.I will study the handbook inside and out like you are saying though so i am more familiar with it.How long have you been a driver ? do you enjoy it?

The reason the school is requiring a pre hire letter is they don't want former students to say they can't find employment after graduation. This is a common practice good CDL schools use for students with criminal records. Not only would this hurt the schools reputation, but the student has wasted thousands of dollars on tuition & now can't put the diploma to work. A few of the companies I listed hire felons and the others on a case by case basis. Ignore what it says on the websites and apply; they bend their own hiring rules.

Werner has been known to hire folks with a felony on their record, but it's one of those bottom feeders you might regret working at. -
i'm lucky i don't have a felony thank god, only a low level misdemeanor.i am going to look into the companies you have listed and apply to see how things play out.i do realize after reading many threads on the forum ,that there are certain companies i should avoid.I know that i am starting from the bottom so i should probably take what i can get and stick it out for a while with a company, but i do want to be at least somewhat cautious and not get totally screwed since i am a new guy.i know that a whole lot of bad things get said about many different companies and everyone has a different experience from person to person and company to company,i realize i have to start somewhere and it may not be the most pleasant experience for a while. but if anyone has suggestions on this subject, feel free to chime in.thanks again everyone for your support on all this so far.
