I am due to start cdl school in about a month and just got off the phone with the ny state dmv.I was told I am disqualified from a hazmat endorsement on my cdl for a few more years because I have a extensive criminal background with felonies that temporary disqualify me for hazmat.I already know it will be tough to find employment with the felonies on my record. My question now is will there be companies who will hire me being a new cdl holder with criminal record with no hazmat endorsement ?

Yes again. But what is the school telling you in regards to your record?
-
Yes, several companies will hire you.
Submit job applications during the first week of CDL school; don't wait until graduation.
Many companies bend their own hiring rules, so ignore what the websites have about criminal record.
If the companies have online applications, submit those and follow with a phone call a couple days later.Buffalo Bill and slowneasy Thank this. -

As far as I understand unless a felony conviction for one of the crimes listed in the above link or if he or she was convicted or found not guilty by reason of insanity within the last seven years or was released from prison
within the last five years for one of the crimes listed above.Maybe I am interpreting the law wrong but
If you have a felony conviction less than say 5 years old your choice of carriers who will hire you regardless of having HME is limitedBuffalo Bill Thanks this. -
The school is saying I will have to knock on some door and be persistent.Their gonna help me find employment to but I want truthful answers from you men an woman on the forum.

You can get a job...it will not be a great job...but someone will let you drive a truck.

Have you paid for the school already? I saw that years ago when I went to a school in Atlanta. Since the state picked up the tab for many inner city young men the school was not honest and took advantage. Truth is only so many companies hire student driver. Maybe 10 or 15 and of those maybe a handfull require Hazmat within a few months of driving. You may get on with a local construction company or container work but doubt seriously you will get hired by any major OTR companies. Just to be sure call them. They all have toll free recruiters. Good Luck and those felonies do fall off after a few years. Sounds like getting your CDL and protecting it is a good start. Good Luck!

I'm trying to think of a starter company that requires a Hazmat endorsement as a requisite for getting hired and can't think of any. Some starter companies that have their own schools encourage the students to NOT get their endorsements until after they graduate school and get hired, as it may slow down the process of obtaining your CDL. Companies like that will then pay you for getting your endorsements later, if you choose to get them.
As others have noted, while getting a job with a felony is more challenging it is not impossible. Be HONEST on your applications. Usually if you note you have felonies you will be required to provide a written explanation. Take time to craft that written explanation. If you've turned your life around, then make that essay the best piece of writing you've done in your life. Be positive about your acknowledgement of the stupid mistakes you've made, what you've learned from them and about life in general, and what your goals are for now and in the future.
Good luck with your job hunt. As soon as you are cleared to do so go back and get your Hazmat. Meanwhile get all the other endorsements you can.EZ Money and Buffalo Bill Thank this. -
You can get hired with a felony. However you said extensive felonies....how recent and what for? This can be a problem for a lot of companies out there. You may have to settle for a crappy job to start.
