The way they state it your TN CDL is kaput because of the problem with your HazMat. I had the same issue for a different HazMat issue. TN never even sent a letter to me. First I knew of any problem was when the TSA mailed a letter to my employer. I got everything cleared up before the expiration of my CDL or my HazMat expiration.

Yes, when I got my own authority I cancelled my hazmat as it was coming due, I had to physically go to the DMV to get it removed and a new license with no hazmat on it.

Yes, that's is correct. If you do nothing, but wait for it to expire, your CDL will get canceled. If you go trade your current plastic CDL for a new paper, then plastic replacement you will be fine.

If you follow your advice your CDL will get canceled. You have to walk into a DMV/Driver License office/whatever your state calls them and turn in your CDL and then they replace it with a paper non-HazMat CDL which is replaced by a plastic CDL without HazMat sent to your address.

This is NOT about logic or what makes sense. If you let it expire, because you never plan to use it they will cancel your CDL. You have to physically exchange your current CDL for a replacement to keep your CDL valid.

I have a TN CDL w HazMat and this happened to me when I was in Wisconsin. TN never sent me a letter. My employer got a letter from TSA and my employer called me. I don't know if other states do it this way. But in Tennessee, if you have a HazMat endorsement and you screw up, your CDL could be canceled BEFORE your HazMat expires or your CDL expires. It seems if TN isn't notified so many days before your HazMat expires that the HazMat has been removed or renewed they cancel your CDL. This is NOT a LOGIC problem and what is REASONABLE is not involved. You cannot just let your HazMat endorsement expire by doing nothing. Doing nothing will cause your CDL to be canceled, you may not even receive notice it was canceled.

Well, not sure about mileage pay, but just yesterday, an ad in our little mountain paper, an outfit in Buena Vista( 2 towns over) is looking for a tanker driver, new equipment, 1 run to Denver/night, 8 hours, $29.50/hr. TO START, come back empty. I mean, you couldn't ask for a better job, no takers. They didn't say it was a "dope run", we did just have Nestle water plant open, but there's a HUGE grow facility in Denver, and they use a ton of water. Hey, no matter what you think of the dope industry, it's BIG, and smells like money to them.

I guess I would never have realized this problem, since I love in Alabama where you have to renew your license every 4 years. You have to renew the hazmat with it no matter how much time you have left on the endorsement.

Renewing your HazMat correctly WILL NOT cancel you CDL. Waiting for your HM to expire CAN cancel your CDL. My employer was notified 1-2 months before my HM expiration that my CDL was canceled due to expiration of my HM endorsement. Repeat, 1-2 months BEFORE my HM expiration. I had already started the online registration for the TSA background check and fingerprint appointment, but had not submitted my fingerprints yet.

My state of Tenn, the state of Mich are doing this. I don't know if other states or if every state is doing this. If you have a HM and you don't intend to renew it you could be walking into a surprise CDL cancellation. In my state the only way to have the HM expire is to walk in to the driver license office, surrender your CDL with the HM, and be issued an new CDL with no HM. If you have HM and want to renew it renew it at the earliest moment, not a couple of weeks after TSA notifies you it's time to renew.
