Just keep in mind it can take 4wks or longer to get your Hazmat endorsement letter. So it better to go a head and get bit now instead of waitingbtill the last minute.
HAZMAT? How many of you have it.

I'm unclear of the "hassle" involved with obtaining it. I filled out an online form and went to a local temp agency who is contracted to collect fingerprints and submit them to the TSA. Took a total of 15 minutes. Does the procedure become more complicated or time consuming when it comes up for renewal?

Maxxdad,
First of all, I am not a new driver but the Haz-Mat endorsment can be a great benefit for you. The reasons that you found the notations to be "a bit false" is because of where you chose or are choosing to work.
I always look at the truck stop employment magazines for fun. It does seem like the pay for a Haz-Mat endorsment is not worth the hassle. Extra pennies for it? Barf! But that is OTR trucking. Little gimmicks to keep the drivers coming in. That's a whole other topic in and of itself.
The endorsment will be worth it's weight in gold if you find the right company where you can have a career and not just a job.
While the original endorsment is on you, good companies will pay for the upkeep of it.
My company pays for my license renewal, Haz-Mat fingerprints and my TWIC card. And that's every time one of them are up for renewal.
The Haz-Mat endorsment is a feather in your cap. It is up to you to find the company that is willing to properly compensate you for your time and value the license that you possess. They are out there. Good luck.

I got mine, cause I want to be able to haul fuel, which would be a local driving job....I currently haul farm chemicals, some of which are HazMat, such as N-Serve which is a stabilizer for anhydrous, and is hauled in mini-bulk containers in the spring and fall for farm application.

I had it. Grandfathered in before the TSA background screening. I dropped it when I renewed my license last October. I was already paying $220 for my license in the ripoff state of North Carolina, and it seemed pointless to tack on an additional $94 for the TSA background screening plus the cost of one more endorsement on top of it in order to keep an endorsement I've never used.
