HAZMAT info on the BOL

    If the freight is labeled as a hazardous material, regardless of amount, the info MUST be both on the BOL AND in the correct order.

    Conversely, if there is hazmat info on the BOL, the freight MUST be labeled as such.

    The reason for this is in the event of an emergency, it makes it easier for emergency responders to identify the shipment in question.

    Now, if you hypothetically pick up 4 unlabeled drums of whatever, something happens, and the product inside turns out to be a hazardous material and the BOL isn't marked either, liability then falls on the shipper.

    Not only must it be printed on your BOL it also must be in the correct shipping name. It's all listed in the 49 CFR Parts 100 to 177. Starting at Subchapter C Hazardous Materials Regulations.
