So, I don't haul much Hazmat, but can someone tell me what would happen if a driver is caught hauling one of the completely prohibited Hazmat classes through the tunnels on the PA turnpike?

According to state laws and federal regulations, hauling hazardous materials through a tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike can result in a significant fine, typically ranging from several hundred dollars to thousands of dollars per violation, depending on the severity of the hazardous material and the specific circumstances of the infraction; in some cases, additional penalties like license suspension or criminal charges may also apply.

Very large fine, re-route and possible criminal charge. Troopers often sit on the outbound side of the eastbound tunnel of the Allegheny mountain, which is the first one going east, and the outbound side of the westbound tunnel of Blue Mountain, which is the first one going west.

It’s interesting that somebody would bring this up. It reminds me of a question I once had years ago.
Corrosive can go through, but not in bulk containers according to the signs. Let’s say theoretically you have 20K lbs of batteries with nothing else on board. Despite the lack of bulk packaging that load still requires an ID placard. Would you still be subject to getting cited by a trooper who might think you’re loaded with totes?77fib77, kemosabi49 and Sirscrapntruckalot Thank this. -
