Ok the sign says " No hazmat thru carriers all hazmat containers must use 270 " sign is in columbus OH on 70. My question is do they mean just plackerd carriers or if you have any on your BOL.

Good question,I think its all plackerded vehicles.Besides why would you not wanna take the bypass thru major cities with or without hazmat. You save a lot of time taking bypasses. If your BOL has hazmat on it then you'll need a plackard. If not you should ask your company to be on the safe side.

Somtimes 270 is much worse than 70, Traffic on my GPS will will have me using 670 if there is problems on 270. Some times I have a couple pounds of hazmat usually none.

Not so fast there driver. Alot of things are considered Hazmat, even something as simple as hair spray. Its the total amount that determines if its place carded or not.

Wrong. I haul Hazmat all the time that doesn't meet the quantity level to need a placard.

Also, If I'm not mistaken, there is a sign that says Thru Trucks use 270 and 70 thru columbus is truck restricted unless it's local delivery. It's been a while since Ive been there but that's what rings a bell.

Somethings no matter the amount, require placards. But for the majority of Hazmat it's the RQ or Reportable Quantity that matters. The shipper should be aware and is responsible to provide MSDS and placards for the load with all safety and emergency contact info. The driver needs to be educated in his/her load and what's required to insure the shipper is right because in the end you will be getting the ticket.

Drivers have to know, many shippers who ship Haz every day don't. One pound of a Table 1, like radioactive, or inhalation hazard goes Haz routes and gets placarded. So you need to know the diff between Table 1, Table 2 items, bulk vs non-bulk (for tunnels) and incompatibility tables.

Table 2, over 1001 pounds total ('aggregate') you need a placard, at least Dangerous. Over 2,205 of one category, you need a placard for that category with UN number.

Haz pays well, in general, so this is good stuff to know. With a complicated load, you do a worksheet to figure out your placarding. I DO run that by dispatch, either by phone or email if I have any doubt, which is fairly frequently. Lots of other requirements, too.

Your bills need to be within reach and visible on your seat or dash if out of truck. BOLs must describe Haz in required ISHP order, must have an emergency phone number. Lose the top page with original signature, just have a copy? $150 fine to driver. In violation. Most of our manifests need original chain of custody from generator. There are parking restrictions when placarded and you stop at RR tracks. Pays well, did I mention that?

    Oh, I did. Good.
