The head of our safety department doesn't have his Class 1 license ( CDL). Good guy, always helpful, but is giving out tips, tricks, and advice about how to drive a heavy vehicle; backing suggestions; driving them in winter. Hard to take his advice too seriously when he has never driven a truck before. It's like someone telling a pilot how to fly a plane properly and safely without ever having done it.
Has anyone seen this before? Seems to me it would be important for safety boss to have his license.

I completely agree with you. Sadly the trucking industry seems to be full of pencil pushers with a college degree ( or not ) who think they know all about trucking but yet have never even sat in a truck. That includes dispatchers.KB3MMX, rabbiporkchop, misterG and 5 others Thank this.

I think the reason my company hired him is he was former MOT ( Canadian version of DOT). So he knows his stuff when it comes to violations, inspections, etc.
-
Or it could have been me who has driven many years and got into safety related things. (Which I will not do... it's very predatory)
But if he is from the MOT then there are certain things he probably knows pretty well, the rest would be a product of educating within that ministry same as our FMCSA when the leadership has never driven a big rig a inch. -
I've had several jobs where the compliance person did not have their CDL. Fact is, I don't remember any that did, it wasn't part of the requirements for the job. One guy was the bosses brother in law, that couldn't hold any other job.

They're ok. We had one that was retired state trooper and was a good safety man. Also, he knew people in high places which came in handy for the company and the drivers.Daplumber Thanks this.

I've seen it. I don't agree with it really, but it all depends on the individual.
-
i don't believe that's a requirement. i have had safety directors that did not have a CDL.
here i am a retired driver of 48 years, and i turned in my CDL, the following week, does that make me unqualified to be a safety director, cuz i don't have my CDL..??? -
All in the same vein,,, most dispatchers don’t have a clue either.
Well it’s only 6 inches away on the map, he can make it there in 3 hours!
