Actually, if I haven't been somewhere before, I google map it to see the overhead shot just to be sure. Some towns have multiple roads with the same name. Seeing trucks in the satellite shot is a good indicator.

GPS is a necessary tool in this day and age of electronic logs especially regarding efficiency and HOS compliance. I don't train my students with one specifically because I want them to learn how to navigate without one in the event theirs malfunctions. You really lose that 6th sense of impending danger if nobody ever taught u how to "eyeball" a turn or just stop, get out and look. Some drivers never develop that skill and completely rely on turn by turn instructions (which can equal catastrophe). I recommend GPS and I have been pleasantly surprised by different routes they have suggested (I encourage students to bring one if they have one so we can compare notes on map planning vs GPS efficiency), although the old school in me "believes my route is best" lol.
