Well finally! Leaving tomarrow for orientation and first few weeks of training:biggrin_2554:. It's roughly 800 mi from the house but it is a small company
150 trucks or so and they ship their own product primarily. It's flat bed
but not all loads have to be tarped. They come pick me up in a van to take us down there, MS along with a couple other people. I graduated
from our community college beginning of Dec. so I am rarin to go! I could
of gone with a local company that does otr but they did'nt allow pets, as I really want to take one of my Labs with me! Not going to take my ol' laptop with me cause I don't have a aircard yet so I might not have much Internet access:biggrin_2553:but will make due. Wish me luck, a little nervous. Thanks AllLab

allLab you might concider taking your laptop, you can use it as a diary of sorts. keeping track of miles, where you picked up, droped off, etc ( microsoft works has a spreadsheet )

also i,ve read where if you get into trouble with the law ( i cant think of an example/ i just got out of bed ) you have hard proof of how the company makes you run.

Something I used to take with me on the road was a mini-cassette recorder. It was absolutely indispensible for recording things while rolling down the road--it's kinda hard to write while you're driving. Now there are digital versions.

Granted, I used mine a lot for... uh... fudging my comic book(s). Yep, I was an outlaw.
    :O_o_1PIRATES7:

But there are plenty of legit uses for it. Notes to yourself; times & mileage; directions to shippers and receivers.

I used to call a shipper or receiver, get directions and repeat them into the recorder. It's easier to listen than it is to read something while looking for the place you need to be. Just make sure you know where the play/stop/forward/reverse buttons are ahead of time and that you can operate them without looking at the recorder.

Good luck!!! I'd take the laptop if I were you, just in case, if you can possibly fit it. There's still free wi-fi out there in places so you never know :)

    Best of luck to you!!!

remember that truck is your home away from home. A lap top would be a great bet. watch movies, track loads and miles, talk with family, maybe even make youre own daily blog. just make sure you can store it safe I dont think you can ever really take too much with you in the truck.

I agree take the laptop... Its easy to get online, especially if the hotel as free wifi. Or any hotel near the truck stops usually have free wifi and most times you don't need a password.
