I was thinking of the storm blowing across mid state.
-
When I was driving, when there was a storm somewhere, I always seemed to be there. I was in NJ the night before Hurricane Sany hit and was always in NC when there was a tropical storm.
4mer trucker and bigred81 Thank this. -
I don't worry too much about storms. Ive had a number of hurricanes and such most of my life. here is what I do if there is one where I am with a 18 wheeler.
Get dispatched clear out of there asap is first option.
Second option if dispatch does not cooperate, then find a ground where you are blocked from the winds but not in such bad ground you flood. There are a number of shopping centers surrounded by man built or cut down mountains behind them in which I take cover up and down the east coast. That way snuggled up against a building first from the ferocious east winds and finally going around the corner against the south and west winds as it leaves...
Third option.
Find a major truckstop. Get into at least the second row with the trailer facing east. Get into the middle of that row. And stay there. ALL the trucks will be rocking and rolling while sitting still so run your engines to feed the airride. Winds up to 55 is not a problem higher gusts are, which is why your trailer is pointed east into it. If you get blown over then half of you will be...
4th option pull a few hundred dollars of your cash money, get into a strong hotel with concrete construction and good ground. Abandon the truck. Dispatch wants you to stay there? Fine it's their truck. ride out the storm in the hotel. Be prepared that you will not have a truck left.
and finally the 5th option If you have cargo that will be smashed like glass beer, you can sometimes find a friendly shipper or reciever, and spend some time latched to a spare dock somewhere far from their general business. Being hooked to the dock via your decap bar under the trailer doors is the last hole card draw you have in your sleeve during a storm. These are generally down by the dumpsters which are usually as big as you are or sometimes by the cardboard crusher with storage box. essentially soft armor for that end of the building. When the storm is finished, they unhook you and let you go. No charges if you ask nicely and maybe combined with a case of this or that.
Storms. Hah.
Now if you want some fun, live in tornado country. when they blow the siren, you get underground and wait a while. Insurance will take care of the rest soon enough. -

Well, this has been an amazing and interesting read to say the least.
Jim, Sarge, and all, words cannot fully describe my appreciation for your taking time over the past few years to document your experiences driving for Maverick.
As luck would have it, my app was made and approved in 24 hours, and I'll be headed to the rock in January, when things start back up after the holidays.
Can't help but think it's been divine intervention to get me where I am today... Long story better shared over coffee...
Keep it shiny side up!JimTheHut and Truckermania Thank this. -
