Just got my confirmation that I'm heading to Millington for school on monday 12/13. It was hard to make this decision to go and spend the holidays away from my 3 little boys...but I figured I should get used to not being around on the big days....plus, I needed to make a move and I'm not getting paid to sit here.

Anyway, I've been reading on here for a couple weeks; this is my first post. Lots of information. The short of my story is that I just decided to do it, found what I think is a good company, and am lowering my head and sucking it up. I can't afford to quit or give up. I never understood people who can choose to do that.

Couple of questions I haven't seen asked. Anybody use their GI Bill for this school...I know, could've gone to a local school, but I figure the company's gonna have to train you anyway, so why not start out where I wanna be. With the GI bill (and I've already used it bunches) question, anybody have any idea? Seemed to have reached the end of my recruiter's expertise, and can't seem to get a person on the phone from the school. I went to the VA website and applied for the benefits that way, will call the VA tomorrow and ask them. Secondly, anybody have a general idea of the schedule...read a couple different reports....my understanding is that I will be in Millington the full 20 days, then back home to take the driving test (btw, just got my permit today..shew)....then to orientation then out with a mentor. I read on here something different and wanted to get a better idea if I can.

Anyway, a bit about me. I'm 35, married 10 years, 3 boys ages 6, 3, and 1 year. I spent 4 years in the navy and got out, oddly enough, to spend time at home as I was gone ALL the time (my oldest was brand new when I got out). I got my bachelor degree from Ohio University in 2006...and have basically been bouncing around trying to find a career.

Finally, fed up with not having a forever job, I'm making the leap (looked into trucking several times in my life). Basically just made up my mind. Yeah, I know, I'll miss my kids (but at least they'll have a house and food and stuff) and my wife (she's a RN, and no it's not enough money to support 3 kids and a husband who can't find good work).

Anyway, that's the quick and dirty. Hope to hear from some people.

btw, seems like i'm going to have to decide flatbed or van at some point in school. I've looked around and am still uncertain, although leaning towards van because someone who's a swifty flatbed said they would recommend a flatbed only company...but I'm willing to listen

Good luck with the school I just finished up mine in San Antonio. I have been waiting for my mentor for about three weeks now so be prepared to wait.

He finally called me yesterday and told me his truck is in the shop and when it gets out he will be down here. I have four small kids myself and going to have to deal with not being here for the first time for Christmas.

here is the number to the San Antonio school 800-825-7598. Maybe you can ask someone there about your question. Every time I have called they have answered.

Wish you the best of luck with Swift!

I would do Van! I use to pull flatbeds and it is a lot more work. Plus you may get a mentor faster by going van than flatbed.

Not sure about that I just remember how hard it was to tarp in blowing snow and wind. getting out freezing to death while securing the load was enough for me to stay with vans.

yeah, I see your point. I figure they'll tell me more at the school, was just trying to get some info ahead of time. I heard less time waiting on a load, .01 more cpm, xtra pay for tarping...just weighing options right now, trying to gather as much info as I can.

My bus leaves Cleveland at 11p EST Sat night I'll get there around 2:30p CST Sunday. I hope the grey dog has internet or that'll be a long boring ride.

Good...see y'all there! I'm a bit intimidated, from what I hear they seem okay about dismissing people, maybe that isn't the case, guess I'll see. No option for failure for me.
