Here's an etiquette question for y'all.
When we pull into a truck stop-or shipper/receiver-at night, should we turn our headlights off?
I've always considered it polite to not blind people when it's not necessary. These lots always have plenty of lighting so I can easily see where I'm going, and of course I leave my parking lights on so other drivers can see me.
However, I've seen notices at somes warehouses asking us to leave our lights on.
What do you think?
headlights on or off at truck stops?

I almost always turn mine off. Unless the lighting is bad enough, or they have a sign posted, I just run my running lights and cruise slow enough that I can dodge the 2 week wonders racing thru the lot.
It amazes me the amount of people that don't have enough consideration to turn 'em off when someone is trying to back into a spot, or after you've parked and are doing paperwork, etc.groundpounder, BigJohn54 and corneileous Thank this. -
Well If I am driving around to find a spot I would have them on... Why? you may think that the lights in most parking lots are sufficient but they really are not. There are always dark spots, something may be happening really fast and if you had your headlights on you may of seen it sooner, somebody may not realize that you are actually moving cause of fatigue ext...many reasons why... Now once I found a parking spot I would turn my headlights off when backing into a spot with my flashers on...
What may seem to be courteous also may be have safety risk... We all know how trucks think they need to run 30 Mph in parking lots nowadays...Last edited: Jul 6, 2008

I turn mine off when I pull in and when I am pulling out at night. If I have a hard time seeing then I will leave them on. There is always some yard bird that leaves them on all night long at a truck stop....
Brickman and I am medicineman Thank this. -
I turn them off once I safely park. I mounted 2 spots on my trailer so that that I can see my wheels up to the rub rails. There have been plenty of times where I have to swing in tight next to another rig or back in tight so these lights and if my load is low enough, the cargo lamps will light up the area. I'd rather apologize for the light instead of apologizing for a dent or worse.
roadkill4512 and LaBubba Thank this. -
i keep my parking lights on at the truck stops at night and when im heading in to a coop at night as well but only if its well lit

I turn mine off unless I am having a hard time seeing. I turn em off if someone is backing though. I have driven a long night pulled into a rest area to nap and forgot about em more then once though lol.

I turn mine off when backing or others are backing, entering a T/S(unless the lighting isnt so good), and when approaching a scale...unless a sign says to leave lights on. I dont leave the running lights on if Im in a T/S overnight, but if Im in a small rest area or parked on an on ramp(rarely), Ill leave 'em on.

In my truck the day times come on as soon as I push in the valve, but at night when I pull into a T/S I'll flip the switch to the park lights, they're not as bright as having them on. If I'm behind someone that is going to back into a hole I'll pull the valves to turn the day times off so they aren't blinded
