Hello all.
my name is andrew and im doing a project for school and i'm kind of looking for a place to start research wise.
The project is to determine the most appropriate trucking configuration for these two situations
LONG RANGE: I need to select a tractor with refrigerated trailer to haul produce from the okanogan valley in British Columbia over the Rockies and across the prairies to Toronto. then take the same route back with processed meat to BC. This is a highly competitive route where time is extremely important
MEDIUM RANGE: I have a contract to haul pulpwood. I will need a tractor-trailer equipped with a "pup" trailer and will haul from a woodlands operation to a mill, 120 km away. part of the trip will be rough logging roads and part of it will be paved. I am paid based on cubic meters of logs hauled each day and can receive a bonus if i exceed certain targets for production and availability
components:
Engine and its options, cab design.
cooling system. exhaust system
axles. fith wheel, wheels tires suspension
driver comfort and safety
braking systems
drive line ratios, speed
hydraulic and electrical systems
Im obviously not asking for you folks to do the project for me, basically im looking for the characteristics i need to look for with the components i listed above. any help is much appreciated.
cheers

So are you wanting to know how these trucks should be spec'd to do their respected jobs?
-
Yes exactly
what type of components i need for each job, im also going to a truck dealership to get spec sheets done also, but i need some sort of starting point thank you -
heavytech Thanks this.

If this is a real project, I have to say that it is a pretty cool assignment. I don't know diesel mechanic wise if you would actually be able to use this information but this assignment should def. be given to some of these guys on here always asking about what truck they should buy and how to become an O/O. I don't know if you are operating on any kind of restrictions such as do the components have to be new or if its a hypothetical to design the best fairy tale unit. I really don't wanna get long winded on here, but for the long haul, I would spec out a cat 3406E motor in any type of aerodynamic tractor. kw t660 or 600/ t800. match it with a 13spd/18spd eaton, 3.36 rears or lower for your best highway fuel miles and you said time was a factor. I would put the tractor up on high rubber, your average cruising speed will be in the high 70s low 80s with running the truck in the sweet spot. Some guys will dispute my motor choice but either way go with something older to avoid def requirements. For your short range wood hauling aspect go with a daycab setup with a much higher rear for pulling. western star has a good platform for rough roads that are bumpy and dish out a beating on the equipment. Good luck with your project and its cool to see real life scenarios thrown out there.

Very cool project indeed, im excited to start putting it together -
For your woods truck, may I suggest a kw. Either a W900 or T800.
A heavy spec extended day cab...
11-5/8 x3/8 frame (maybe a double)
550-600 hp ,18 speed trans and 4.10 rear gears on 11R24.5 rubber.
20/46 axles with full locking rears. I'd do Hend primax air ride or haulmax suspension .
Heavy duty cooling and electrical systems.
Small fuel tanks, maybe even steel.
Not sure what your weight limits are....? So tare weight is a minior issue to think about.
If your (theoretically) paid by the cubic meter with bonuses. The more wood you can stack on the better........
Hope this gets you started.....Last edited: Mar 16, 2014

The limitations are...
has to be 2014 truck
front axle GVW no more then 11,000 lbs
and the logging truck needs a hydraulic grapple, any companies i could look for that make such grapples?
Also the refer. on the long haul trailer has to pass todays emissions standards
