I may have too many self-imposed constraints, but I'll introduce myself, with a synopsis of my experience.
I like platforms and am not limited to heavy haul, specialized.
I meandered around the lower 48 and 3 Canadian provinces, for 10 years.
Now, I'm looking for something more regional, as a company driver - Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, etc...
Other than bridge beams (5 states) in second half of 2011, I haven't done much since January 2009.
That is when I ceased to be an owner operator, doing High, Wide or Heavy.
Heavy Haul Experience:
Load Dimensions To 92,000 pounds, 16' high, 14' wide, 112' long.
Experience includes Flatbeds, Stretch Flatbeds, 3-axle Mechanical RGN Double Drop, 5-axle Steerable & Tankers with no baffles.
I've hauled everything from steel coils and heavy equipment, to bridge beams. High, Wide or Heavy.
Tractor with lift axle - 4 axles, total.
Steerable Bridge Beam trailer with 5 axles (3+2).
I have driven a 5 axle steerable in reverse, for more than 7 miles, in the Ozarks.
I have a current medical card and long form.
Endorsements include Triples & Tanker.
I have No Criminal Record, No DUI/DWI and No Passport .
I have No interest in Tarps, HazMat or TWIC.
I can handle a job where tarping is less than 15 to 20% of the loads.
The tarping incentives are generally discouraging, though.
Straps and chains are OK. Even half-inch chains.
I have a couple of big gaps in employment and recently started with a flatbed company that has the stench of imminent closure, like Trism and PFT Roberson.
Any recommendations?.A picture of the mechanical RGN, with a reel of fiber optic cable, 15', 11.5" loaded height (16').

Alright amigo...looked everything over. I may be wrong, but you're going to need that TWIC card. You need it for both ports and military bases. I've stayed in the Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska Dakota's area and made money, but that's seasonal. You can run back and forth between Iowa/Illinois and the ports ( Baltimore, savannah, and Houston), but you need to have that TWIC.
Who Thanks this. -
Thanks for the input.
You are quite right about the TWIC, as I have foregone some great jobs because of that requirement.
I also don't want to run coast to coast and border to border, no mo'.
I just edited the post to show the pictures, rather than just link to them.
Couldn't figure out how to reduce the presented size... -
Lot of your big loads come out of the ports, and quite a bit of your machinery goes to the port. For an OSOW driver, I don't see getting around the TWIC card.
There are quite a few players in your area. Midwest Transport, Tennant, Pape, valley Transportation, Buchanan out of Indiana.seawind Thanks this. -
Forgot Keen. They don't even carry tarps. Thing is about Keen is they are all over. You won't be able to stay where you want to stay.
seawind Thanks this. -
We go to military bases all the time. Ft Meade, Levenworth etc. Never been asked for a twics. Twics for ports? save your money...I would rather take a beating than deal with the jerks at the ports. the long shoreman can jump in the bay before I deal with them.
-
If he's going to drive someone else's truck, he will have to go where they pick freight up. If they pick up at ports, he will need a TWIC card. And yes, some military bases require the TWIC.

Hi, ost1.
I've been to military bases, ports, power plants, refineries, etc., all across the country.
So, I'm no stranger to the environment.
You gotta have it, whether they ask for it, or not.
It would be foolish to haul a load while facing the risk that they might ask for it.
It wouldn't take much to prompt them to start checking every incoming driver.
Whether ports or distribution centers or grocers, the best behavior is a harmless joke.
Let something else occupy your mind, to reduce the interaction to a minimum, and keep smiling.
That will let the local boss do what he will, with no pressure. It can save you time...
Hey, TripleSix. That be right.
Buchanan is all O/O, aren't they? Never heard of Pape, before.
They stay pretty much in the Western states, based on their fuzzy website.
Valley is also a Keen subsidiary, isn't it? It's been a while, so my mind might not be right. ツ
I think Tenant tarps a lot. Need to look a little closer, when I can.
I'm not familiar in the least, with Midwest. I think I parked in their front door, at Grand Island, today.
Unless it was another Midwest something or other.
Thanks for all the input. This may be mission impossible, but we'll see. -
What's with this 'moderator approval'.?.
On my own thread.?.
Which did not require 'moderator approval'.
I think I got spooked on this site, once before... -
