After a couple weeks doing heavy haul and over size moves...I have questions for you O/O.

    Regarding your rates.

Do you charge HHMG or practical mile? Or do you charge "permitted" routing miles ??

We had several moves over the past 2 weeks. All requiring different routing, Based on width, height, weight, or all.

HHMG was 223 miles. Actual "permitted" routing for ONE of the loads, was just over 650 miles.

For those of you who may wonder if I will be doing this for awhile...the answer is no. This was a temp position, for a local company needing drivers to move their equipment to an auction site. The "few" drivers they had, bailed after they announced the closing of the business.

That depends on who is booking the load. Routed miles will always be more than the load pays, some times its a huge difference. One load I did (16' tall) was 1100 miles from OK/TX line on Hwy 287 to Houston! The states pick the routes so your at their mercy. I have said many times $10 per mile means nothing in HH.

That's what I was thinking, and why I asked.

I've heard huge rates quoted before. And was wondering how those rates applied.

I often hear drivers say they got $4 or $7 a mile for oversize. But it doesn't seem like so much...when you look at the permitted routing vs HHMG.

Then add the DH miles, and then the money don't look so good. I pull a 4 axle DD stretch trl. and make a decent living running about 60,000 miles per year. I'm really picky~ I'll sit for a week or more to get a load I can make money on.

I base my rates on the route i will travel not pratical or other wise, if the truck runs 500 miles loaded thats what i base my rate on plus i try to squeze on a little extra if i have to dead head more than usual

Thanks for the info guys. :biggrin_25514:

I've spent the last 2 weeks under tri-axles and quad axles. Moving everything from 15 ft high, to 16 ft wide, with huge over hangs front and back...grossing just over 130k.

It's been educational for sure....especially with Arkansas routing on Hwy 82 through the #!##! construction zone outside of Crossett.

And I've come to the conclusion that highway construction crews must have #### for brains.

If you do your own permiting like I do.I just call the state with h-w and weight and ask them what routes they are going to give me from point to point before I quote it.
Most are of them are happy to do it.
I sure will be glad when all this Obama money gets used up so I can get back on the big roads:biggrin_25525:
