Hello Drivers, I have about three years O.T.R. experience that's about five years old. I've driven for USA Truck, Swift Transportation and a few smaller companies and ended my career in October '07. Anyway I'm trying to find out if there are any companies that have installed thermo-king units or equivalent on their tractors? Or how bad the idling issues have gotten? Oh and what's the skinny on the e-logs?

    Thank you,
    KThomp1979

A lot of large carriers have gone to ELogs. Eventually they will be required for everybody. They've been trying to push it already.

Thermoking Units guessing you mean APUs?

We use TriPac APUs... fuel economy is a big deal for company drivers with a weekly minimum they must achieve. On the lease side, the motiviation is in the bottom line - less money to the oil companies means more for you. Limiting idle time is a natural way to help this out, but we have the APUs for air/heat/power.

Elogs... you have to run smarter, plan your trips thoroughly, and keep track of where you are in the trip plan. For me it's not stressful, just something added to what I have to do to be successful. Since going to elogs over two years ago, I have been doing fine from a cash-flow perspective. I'm paid a percentage of line haul and fuel surcharge. Mileage isn't really a concern for me.

Whether there are APU's depends on the company. Same with the e-logs. Some companies are using them, some aren't.

What do you mean by "weekly minimum" a company driver must achieve?

The company guys have to average 7 mpg (the last I heard) week over week. It's not hard with the newer engines, even though we're up near 80,000 lbs most trips. They make allowances for winter fuel, weather, the occasional off-week.

I used elogs for about 10 years. Took awhile to get used to but after that I preferred elogs. It teaches time management and you feel more rested.
