I order our VHS radios programmed for the license-free MURS channels and the feedback from our drivers and escorts is absolutely perfect clarity with zero interference. We're based out of NJ but run superloads across the 48 states. Just my 2¢.

SW Florida is what we call home, but we can be all over the place. We find ourselves in NE USA a lot... Seems to be a lot of OSOW stuff running to and from the Northeastern states.
Will be looking into VHF for sure.

When it comes to working on CBs I'm a novice but I do know enough that those magnetic antennas are junk. Best advice I can give is go to a good CB shop and let him set you up, just don't let him talk you into echo, all those beeps, and such, just tell him you want a good clear sounding CB. You don't need to spend a ton money to have a decent CB, just one that's set up right.

Nothing worse than a pilot car with an over modulated, echo'd up reverb'd piece of crap radio. I want to hear each word you say once, not 10,000 times per second.

Had a car pick me up on the run at the TX/OK line one time. He had all that crap turned on/up. I told him to turn it off as I can't understand half of what he was saying. He then decided to argue with me about it, and how other people said it sounded good.

We got to the scale on US75, had to go walk my permit inside. Came out and walked over to him and said, you can either turn that crap off, or you can pull your signs and flags and go back home. He turned it off. I hate those obnoxious radios.

Not hauling chickens, so no need for the echo reverb crap. I'm with Oscar I want to hear clear left clear right and cleared the turn..

Whether you learn to do it or pay someone to do it,, doesn't matter,, But a good radio has 4 or 5 components that basically need to be adjusted or setup for each other. Power, Radio, Mic, Coax, Antenna
And the 2 most important pieces do not include the radio itself!!

    Antenna and Coax!!!!
Buy high quality, and tune these two items and even a cheap radio will sound fine.

Good antennas are adjustable,, #### antennas are adjusted by cutting the end off with a pair of side cutters!!!
Some radios have a built in SWR meter that you can use, or you can buy a meter to put inline with the coax in order to adjust the antenna.

And yes, as others have mentioned run at least two radio's, pick a random normally unused channel to work on, that's quiet and you'll not be bothered by Jimbob bragging about his big pipe, and how janebob likes it!! but monitor 19 on the other so if there's something being passed along, Like Right shoulders blocked by another oversize at mile???,,, you can hear it.. and be ready for it...
