Here's the thing.. a driver who has gained knowledge and experience in the trucking industry.. and has a thought out business plan that they have worked on and tweaked over a few years... does not need as much money to become a successful O/O as a person who knows nothing of the industry and doesn't even know how to drive a truck yet..
Not to mention any business advisor.. which being an O/O is a business..always advises anyone thinking of starting their own business to first gain industry knowledge and experience..
So.. if you do in fact have $150,000 to invest in a business adventure.. that is no where near enough if you don't acquire some business sense...
Hello I am interested in trucking.

You're thinking this is some sort of American Dream, but it's not. Starting out, it's low pay. Bad lifestyle. You're going to need an entirely separate type of visa to be an owner operator, since you're starting your own business. And if you run OTR, you'll find every disgusting stereotype of us Americans at the Pilots, the Flying J's, and whatever else.
Our trucks are probably heavier than what you see on the road in Britain, and you'll have to learn to shift with your right hand and not your left. Is this dream possible? Yeah. But let's say you find yourself in your own truck, living in America, living the dream. You realize you hate it. What will you do then? Light the truck on fire, collect the insurance ca$h money and then flee back to the U.K? Haha..
Have you considered emigrating to a commonwealth country? I think, Australia has some good opportunities in trucking. And I think, their vehicles will impress the hell out of any safety manager in the USA when he reads, you safely and regularly pulled a 20-car road train down the outback. That alone could get you a solid work visa for the USA. Because unless you have cash to start out with, or a rich dead uncle leaving you an inheritance, or a spouse/cosigner with citizenship in the USA, you'll never secure financing. You need an SSN and good credit history to even be considered for financing...Rocknroller4, homeskillet and Shock Therapy Thank this. -
Just go to a company sponsored training program, youll work for reduced wages for one year.
After your first year, youll be able to make 40 cents per mile.
A good year solo, you can expect 100,000 miles..maybe more depending on the skills of your dispatcher.
Let the company pay for truck, Insurance, tires, fuel, cracked windshields, and all other expenses.Shock Therapy Thanks this. -
www.OOIDA.com is a business website for the owner-operator. Better study that and learn what's required to be a small business owner that happens to own a truck.

Cheers for the info man, will have to think about what the right decision is, brexit will be a good start for Britain but it has gone downhill since 2000 I feel like I don't know what country I am in sometimes with the amount of people that can't speak the language getting free houses, on benefits no intention of getting jobs it's just take take take without sythering back in the system, Also the country has let 400 Isis fighters back too I couldn't believe it when I typed it in on Google, the government is a joke not like it used to be.Shock Therapy Thanks this. -
