Hello Trucks Report users! I am what you guys might refer to as a "newbie." I haven't even started trucking school yet and I wanna as much as possible. I've owned a small labor business that specialized in household moving, and I've had experience driving reefer box trucks delivering cold food. I try to maximize my potential and don't mind working hard to realize it.
Getting to the point... I've researched on here the best-paying jobs for trucking(besides the obvious ie ice road trucking, driving in Iraq, etc etc) and have found the HOUSEHOLD GOODS driver/movers and LOCAL FOOD DELIVERY seem to be the best paying jobs out there. I'm psychically able to do both of them.. and have experience in both, so my question for you guys is.. what do you guys think is best? I talked to some locals here and they also mentioned logging is a good venture if you are "fast". If household goods or local food delivery isn't the best for a newbie like me, then what might you recommend? I don't mind driving OTR since I'm single and have no kids.. but it seems to be limiting my potential. I rather work hard than sit on my butt all day long anyways. At this point I have no extra endorsements, just the combination.. but I'd look into tanker/hazmat if that's a better route.
Thanks a million for the help.
Hello Truckers, I'm a newbie and I have a few questions!

How about Howard Transportation right there in Ellisville. Need hazmat endorsement because they haul electrical equipment that uses cooling oil with PCB's. They hire new cdl grads.

Ha, I'm in the application process with them. They seem like a good company from what I can tell, but I don't want to limit myself. They pay .40/mi after training($500/wk for training).
I kind of like physical labor too, and don't want to get super fat sitting in a truck all day. That's why I want to inquire about other types of jobs. If that's your pick, than I respect it though!Chinatown Thanks this. -
I don't have any knowledge of household and am just getting into local freight (some ltl but not always), so I can't help ya there, but I have a question for you.
Define "best". Best is different for everyone.
You said you like the physical labor.
You have experience in household goods AND cold delivery Wichita is great.
What do you want in a company? Want to be in a union?
You are single with no kids, so you are okay with long hours and different shifts?
Cold delivery is lots of overnight stuff (I did that OTR for a year).
Things to ponder.....
@Chinatown and others that are WAY MORE experienced than me will chime I shortly.
There's something out here for everyone. Good luck! -
Dang it man. I tagged you in a post but you beat me to him!!!

If you want the physical labor be a bed bug. Make good money and work our ##### off. After a few years of that you can move into special commodities still a bit physical but nothing like household lumping 10 or 20 k lbs up three flights of stairs in Phoenix when it's 115 in the shade lol. I actually do the spec com stuff now. Love it and the money

It's not that household goods or food service is best or not, but why break your back when you don't have to. I've done food service, but not household goods. HHG drivers seem to really like it and make good money.
There's manual labor in flatbed, but it's just in short bursts of labor, then hit the road.
Hazmat/tanker pays well and is easy money. There's a few companies that hire new cdl grads.
Superior-Carriers
Tidewater Transit
SVTN
CTL Transportation
Schneider Bulk
McKenzie Tank Lines
Girton Propane ServiceLast edited: Aug 9, 2016

I'm not sure if I want to be in a union or not. Never have been in one before. And thanks Chinatown for the suggestions, I will look into these companies before I dedicate myself to a company I might regret later.

Also check Old Dominion Freight Line for a line haul job. This company is one of the best and hires new cdl grads.
Here's some more to research:
Tyson Foods
Jim Palmer Trucking
Freymiller
Abilene Motor Express
You probably won't hear about any of the companies I've listed, in cdl school. They usually push the same old 4 or 5 "usual suspects" which makes their "job placement" easy.Anonymous Trucker Thanks this.
