hello everyone
i am just a guy who has thought alot about driving semis. Sadly i went and spent $30k on a computer programmin degree which aint worth the paper it is printed on. after having a long discussion w/ my grandfather, who has been driving trucks off and on his entire adult life, i have finally made the dession to do so. Just have to figure out where to get started. I wont be seriously looking till after this father son vacation i have planned for july. Due to i really wanna spend time with him, he is kind of my idol, and i have pumped close to a grand in hotel and my car for the trip lol. but after that i am going to find a way to get into it and really want to do this.

You'll be glad you did, once you find what works best for ya... for me (confirmed bachelor that I am), it means running from one coast clear to the other, usually in big ol' triangles: CA-PA-GA-CA, CA-NC-IL-CA, those sort of runs which make for good mileage and let my hours roll over so the truck keeps moving. You'll find plenty of info on this site, and some experienced drivers who offer excellent observations... ya might also check out www.bumper2bumpertruckbook.com for additional schooling. Good luck, hand!!! The attrition rate is high out here, but for those who make it it is one heck of a lifestyle... you sound like the kind of hand who might make it work, all it requires is TOTAL COMMITMENT.
Think of it this way: plan on restructuring your entire life around truck driving, and you will certainly succeed. Buy into the negativity and the whining, and you will fail... it's that simple. Reading your post, I reckon you'll have what it takes, and you'll have WAY MORE FUN than you would with that ol' computer programming degree which isn't worth the paper upon which it is printed (don't feel bad about that, mine isn't worth much either, and most of those jobs will probably be outsourced eventually anyway, 10-4?). Just another "benefit" of globalization, you understand... the good news is: it's kinda hard to outsource a truck driving job.
"Adios!!! They call me 'THE RAILSPLITTER' when they're not MAD AT ME, which is why you'll hardly ever hear my handle, 10?"

Hello, and welcome, RDirr!! Research this forum a LOT, before you decide which kind of training will work best for you, ie:a company sponsored training where you will have to drive for them for X amount of time after training, or a community college, etc.
There is all sorts of info here, and a lot of folks who will help answer your questions.
As with any job, research, research, research is the key to making a decision which suits your needs.
Have a WONDERFUL father/son trip, and keep us posted on your progress!!
