I just joined this forum and group. I posted in the "Welcome Wagon", and introduced myself but I am hoping to get some good information from the variety of drivers out there. I have some experience within the transportation industry and love it. I've been out of it for 5 years now, and recently found myself with the opportunity to become a driver recruiter.
I'd like to get everyone's opinions on recruiters (horrible, bad, good, and great). I want to understand from a driver's perspective:
1. What recruiters could do better?
2. What is the most annoying thing about recruiters?
3. Knowledge Recruiters should have about drivers/transportation industry, but generally don't.
4. Anything else you'd like to add.
I am very appreciative of your time and information. Idealy, I'd love to sit down with a few very experienced drivers and get their take on everything. I am hoping to be able to do just that with a family friend, but haven't had the chance yet.
Help a lady out! Want opinions on the recruiters you've worked with.

Good Luck. Hope your a good one.

LOL Colorato - thanks for the reply!
Jeez, I take it that dishonesty is a strong stereo type. noted. -
What kind of recruiter will you be? In-house or "independent"?
-
Forty - Independant.
Which also brings up a few questions; are independant recruiters more or less trusted than In-House? If I were a driver, it seems that I would be more distrusting toward an in-house recruiter since it's obvious that they are only representing their company. But, Independant recruiters are very much on their own and therefor there is seemingly no chain of command for drivers to go through if they have a complaint about the recruiter's service... -
In house are the ONLY ones I'd deal with.
No offense intended, I'm sure you can understand. -
123....none taken, but I dont understand and that's why I'm here. Thanks for the help

Independent recruiters are more likely to lie, just to get that commission and move on as they have zero skin in the game as well. They can also make zero decisions that aren't on a flow chart, and most are just reading directly off of one. I've recruited for my own company, and I've been an independent recruiter for a halfazz outfit out of Dallas. If the company you're going to work for doesn't have original leads, and instead relies on lists they buy, you're going to work very hard for very little payoff.

1 & 2 not knowing major lanes, avg length of haul, etc AND unwillingness to ask someone who might know
i guess that kind of covers 3 as well. i find that a recruiter that has been a driver usually has good perspective.......
But i understand that the job is to get the headcount through the door and not to fit the right peg in the right hole....
However since you are asking to gain a perspective, perhaps you will be a credit to the profession
Magilly Thanks this. -
Cuzzin it - I appreciate that. At this point I want to make sure that with the right tools and knowledge, I'd be able to make a decent living with this career change. I am trying to learn as much as possible so that I can make that decision in confidence. Reading some of the posts about dishonesty being a character trait among recruiters is sad. I hope that someone who is honest can make it, because I will not accept going into a career where lying and being shady is what you have to do to make a living. I guess that is where I am in this search, and why I came to this forum. If I can get enough insight into why some recruiters fail, and why others are successful, then I'll feel better prepared to say "yes" or "no" to changing my path in life. Please keep the comments and insight coming!
