Help a lady out! Want opinions on the recruiters you've worked with.

    A recruiter is typically only as honest as the "driver" trying to bull-sh$4t their way in. I don't know what would be worst, dealing with individuals with ZERO driving experience or dealing with those who have "too much" driving experience. But I would hope that a recruiter dealing with the flood of out-of-work citizens who are desperate, will be up-front and honest with these people because most don't have a clue about the lifestyle and it's only for a very relative few. The last thing this industry needs is one more disgruntled "driver" who came in with unrealistic expectations and wasn't aware of all of the down-sides that go along with the few upsides.

    ... If you're going to be an "independent" recruiter, please be selective about those you'll represent and understand their weaknesses and strengths and how these relate and may fit best to a particular driver looking for work. I'd do this by talking with drivers who've been with the company a minimum of 5 years (if you can find one) and establishing how the company operates, where they focus their efforts, how much they do/don't involve the seasoned driver in various decision-making junctions, primary operating regions if they are limited or focused anywhere, how they spec their trucks, how they plan to spec their trucks, etc, etc.

    You can tell a lot about a large trucking outfit by how they spec their trucks and handle their day-to-day maintenance operations. You expect them to be frugal, but there is a point where frugality can be over-stretched to seriously impede on driver long-term happiness with the company. I'd shy away from any company that might go an entire year or more sometimes without cycling out any old equipment with new.

    In house (preferably ex drivers with the company) are the only recruiters who can give honest answers to real questions. Other recruiters can only give the canned prepared answers given to them. The answers have to be canned and prepared because how else are the recruiters going to know what is bogus or not? The recruiter is in my opinion on the hook and frankly MAY indeed be lying through their teeth and not even know it. I could not represent or recruit for a company that I did not have real knowledge of. Also.. no offense intended.. I would hate to be caught in such a catch 22.

    STexan & FuzzyNOK: thank you, thank you. STexan, those are the details I was looking for. I hope I am able to make that contact with some of the seasoned drivers to get a better idea of the companies that I will be representing. I hope to get to the point to know the "real truth" about a company, and not just trust the info they give me.
