So they don't let you fill up at truck stops? You have to fill up at terminals for the most part? My concern about that is that I don't get the free stuff associated with filling up at a truck stop. Do you know if that's mandatory or not?

Can you tell me more about what the terminals have to offer? They sound like a good place to route through as I work towards getting to my destination. This is all assuming I go with Scheider, of course. Right now they seem like the most interesting *large* company to go with.

I work with people in a plant setting and the only way to make money in this job will make whatever you are doing now look glamorous in a few YEARS when you actually have the chance to make money doing this job. It has been said millions of times on these boards..if no one else is hiring why are trucking companies? Because few people can stand to do it. A single person or a couple with no ties and I have seen single parents doing it but they are few and far between. The job itself is ok except for wrecking your health but the pay is a JOKE.

I know they have sucked you in with the advertising but please do not quit your job if you have been there that long. Do you have a retirement plan? Right now you are covered by labor laws and OSHA. You will not be in trucking.

Actually if I didn't like driving I would think I was smart. I got into it when it was just starting to go downhill and that was a long time ago. I'm just trying to save you some grief as shutting off the flow of new drivers for companies to abuse looks to be an impossible task.

Just fyi if I didn't mention before-who can remember after awhile on these posts?
My husband got a dedicated route right out of training at his company so it can happen. He is home most weekends so far since mid March only 2 or 3 I think he has not. Depending on the freight and runs he is home 2-3days. Company is understanding as the DC is about 320 miles from where we live and they still get him home pretty much. Sometimes -like tomorrow-he may not be able to get home until Saturday vs Friday night as I think he will run out of his 11 from where he is- back haul back to DC pick up load and back to where we are. He just might make it but he also has the electronic e log- not that he runs illegal.
He did 'luck' out to get this route but that's cuz someone has just quit and he was trained on this.
It can happen not likely but who knows! Keep the faith!!! You have all along and good for you!!:biggrin_2559:

btw good response on my pee comment very funny!!

I can tell you right now, I'm not being sucked into trucking due to advertisements. I'm truly not an idiot. I actually have the ability to decipher truth from bull, and I like the positives of the career I'm choosing.

    • Trucking is appealing to me because it is NOT glamorous.
    • I love seeing this great country, and I love to travel.
    • I love to stay in hotels, whether they be crappy, or some of the best in the country i.e. Four Seasons, Motel 8.
    • I love crappy food, I've just never been a picky eater.
    • I love the concept of waking up in the morning, taking a shower, and getting back on the road.
    • I love going out for a drive in my car. Every week day I do a minimum of 132 miles round trip. I will have had my car for a year in July and I'll have already put 36,000 miles on it (at least I won't be doing that anymore).
    • I get the fact that it will be a couple of years before I begin to see the money I would like to see from my job, but I can certainly manage to keep my expenses low and enable my family to have enough to live on.
I'm sorry, I understand what you are trying to do. But I'm not just some newbie who's enticed by some advertisement I saw on TV. Frankly, I live an area where we get Philly TV and let's just say the area is too urbane to have trucking job ads posted on our TV.

This career is right for *me* as an individual. If it doesn't fit others who give it a try, that's all the better for *me*.

Hey ORG, this is going to be the greatest adventure of your life. I can tell by what you've been posting in your threads that you will make a good trucker. Sounds like you have it in your blood. If I could go back and do it all over the only thing I would change is I didn't take enough pics and vids! Make sure you document your whole adventure. Once you get out of school it may seem a little bit overwhelming. Just remember its not just a job but it is also a lifestyle. I think once you are about three months into it you'll have yourself a good groove and be confident enough to enjoy it. Stay in touch on truckersreport and if you ever have any questions you will most likely get your answers here. Good luck to you! You won't regret it!

Falcon's recruiter has been to my driving school, Tri-State Truck Driver Training, Inc. twice now passing out applications. I was just informed that I was approved for orientation, and will go as soon as I pass my state test, which will hopefully will be next week. I don't know for sure if they are hiring students from other schools or not, it wasn't mentioned in their briefing. I do know that they are looking to fill team positons for their dry van division. They also have a flatbed division, but I haven't looked into that.

It will only wreck your health if you LET IT. Your health is up to you. You can make the choice to do what it takes to stay healthy, in other words, eat right, exercise and keep your mind active. OR you can make the decision to "let trucking wreck your health."

And some of us really are trying to inform you about the things nobody wants to talk about.
I'm not real sure that I'd call it being negative........

However, with turn-over rates in excess of 100-200%, and failure rates for new drivers above 80%, I feel that both sides to the story must be told.

I am following this thread until its end, and look forward to enjoying it's journey.
