    Good Evening Forum Dwellers,

I apologize if this post is newbish or stupid, but i'm trying to form a plan to become an OTR trucker. My great uncle and Great grandfather were both truckers in the own right (one a teamster one a O/O) and i would like to make a career out of it myself currently i'm a small route driver using a van for a drycleaner company in New Hampshire, but i'd like to hit the open road. I've been doing some research online and stumbled across these forums, from what i've gathered in the six or so hours i've been trolling them i've found some newbie pitfalls people usually take, aka leasing a truck right off the bat. Sadly i can't find a decent program close to home as new hampshire isnt a trucking sort of state and if i'm going to pay for my own cdl i'll have to keep up my current job while i go to class for it, so i was hoping for one of the company owned training sessions i hear about but every time i look one up, (crst, Cr england) i find people saying it's basically a scam that will leave me penniless and jobless. i was hoping I could get pointed in the right direction of a good program or company which would be able to help me. And/or any tips a newbie MUST know as sadly neither my grandfather nor my uncle are alive anymore to advise. I am aware of the lifestyle involved and how difficult and stressful it can be, I'm turning 22 in about a month now and have no family or obligations back home anymore so i think the road could do me some good ^-^. Thank you for your time! :biggrin_25514:

it will be difficult holding onto a job and go to trucking school. there isn't anything close to you except in MASS, at some college up there, and they ARE connected with NETTTS whom i would not recommend. but that is sadly, and option for you. do an online search.

now there are a few trucking companies that will train you and you get your license from them, but you will be leaving your home and attending thier school where ever they are located. they all have horror stories for sure, but this may also be an option for you as well.

you will have to decide, a local school (located in MASS) and keep your job, or a trucking outfit....there really isn't anything else, for you and your particular location.

If you are serious about paying for your CDL rather than owing some loan shark company 6k, then find a training for hire company. You'll work for them for a period (usually a year) then be cut loose to go your own way, or you can stay on with them if you like. Honestly, I think you'd be better off that way as a lot of schools 'teach the test' and nothing more. You'll get better experience from your driver/trainer from the company. Read these boards to find out which companies to steer clear of...

I've never worked for them personally but Millis Transfer has there own school and they seem to be a pretty good company. Or you could always give swift a shot with them its free, I have a few freinds that do and or have worked for swift and they all liked it enough to stay a year or two.....

Thank you very much Rerun that's sadly what i managed to find as well just mass, then New york is the next closest after that looks like i'm looking for a train to hire company, Any suggestions other then Swift and millis? I was just talking with My late uncles wife a few hours ago but sadly all she could tell me is to avoid Cr england at all costs, and that my uncle never liked company driving and was jaded against it =/. Any help would be great, thank you for your time.:biggrin_25514: Also yes i'm VERY against loansharks xD.

There is also Allied Tractor Trailer Driving School in Methuen, Mass. Don't know anything about them as I went to NETTTS in North Andover. Despite what I've read on these boards, I thought NETTTS was ok, but then again, since I only have been to that school, I have nothing else to compare it to, nor will I ever. They may not be the best, but you can get it done there.

I don't work for swift, but check them out, and you could work for them for a couple years and then move on. Would be a good time for you to get into trucking at your age and get out and see the country, then If you don't like it you are still young enough do do something else. But, do not lease...do not lease...do not lease...get my drift?
