We have visited Southwest Truck Driver Training in Las Vegas and really cannot find anything negative about them on the web. The BBB has them with a B+ rating in Las Vegas and an A in Phoenix. Has anyone out there used them for training or do you know someone that has? We haven't signed up for training with - would like to communicate with someone that has personal knowledge of their training. Any info would be greatly appreciated - also what about pre-hire at Werner for team drivers? thanks

I interviewed with Southwest and AIT there in NLV. I went with AGS Consultants in Henderson. They do the on-road portion one-on-one. I am pretty sure that both AIT and SW cram 3 or 4 students in the cab with the instructor for the road portions.

They are really small, only 2 guys, really. Sarge is ex-army-special forces, and his partner, Von, is ex-air-force. So you do get trained in a 'military manner'. They are also approved by the Nev DMV, so they give you your skills, pre-trip inspection, and driving tests. SW remarked to me that AGS was a 'CDL Mill' but my experience was nothing like that.
I would say to check them out unless you really like group learning.

Were you able to get grant money with the one in Henderson?
-
Yes. Bridge Consulting gave $3k and Job Connect gave the other $400. Their normal price is $3900 but they give grant guys a $500 break.

Michael,
Sorry so many questions, but are they a 3rd party tester? Also, what was the time frame from when you received your grant to the time you actually earned your CDL? We are very new to this and want to make sure we get the best training available.
Thanks -

Once the grant was approved, Sarge will start your training as soon as you want. I started the following Monday. Their training is 160 hours. But if you are alone in your class, as I was, you can go as fast as you want. I went straight thru, no weekends or days off. Just went every day til I was done.

Yo 2CC, I'm attending Southwest in Tucson. I've heard so much about some of these other schools around the country. All I can say from my own experience is this is probably one of the BEST schools anywhere. It's standard 160 hrs. The director and staff have been extreemly helpful in every way possible. I drove trks back in the 60's and 70's and gave it up to raise a family and other thins in my life. So now it's time for me to get back and do my thing. The instructors there are some of the best professionals you could ask for. Training is very intense and no nonsense. However they make you feel comfortable and confidant about testing. I will do my finals this week and be on my way to Phoenix before Christmas for Werner Training. If you can, I advise you to give Southwestern a chance. You wont be sorry,,Good luck,,Deacon

Hi Road Deacon - thanks so much for your input on Southwest! We just don't want to make a mistake in what training we go for - we don't want to just get a CDL - we want to come out of a school knowing that we have been trained to drive 80,000 lbs of equipment with no problem. Like you, we do not want to do this again! So, are you going with Werner as solo or team driver? Keep in touch - I think we could be a huge help to each other since we are "Newbies" and I am sure we have a lot to learn. I just don't want to waste another minute because I didn't do my research! Thanks again!

Reviving a dead thread is better than starting a new one but i had a good experience during their training here myself. I went to the tucson campus and the trainer was such a nice guy i call him once in a while and he gives me advice.

I am planning on taking their course in May here in Las Vegas. I am looking forward to it. I am also applying with Gordon Trucking. Hope all works out
