1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Hi all.....I'm a recent grad of a driving school, got my CDL A and relocated from NY to NC. I have had issues with my license in the past which included multiple suspensions for mainly non payment of traffic tickets. My license was reinstated in Aug. of 2006 and have not had any tickets or accidents between now and then. I have never had an DUI or felony arrests in my lifetime. I can't seem to get hired for mainly that reason although I have been told there are gaps in my recent employment history that were in the 3-6 month range and disqualified me. Now it seems the gap between my graduation date and now has become an issue. It is 7 months since graduation and that has prevented me from being hired from certain companies. In fact, in the middle of this post I got a call from FFE and was set to get the details to go to Dallas for orientation when the gap between now and my graduation was the issue. I can't seem to find a company that wil accept one shortfall and not another. Can anyone suggest a possible solution to my problem. PS yes I have applied to Werner and have been rejected. I also have 20+ years of straight truck experience in Manhattan.

You might try some of the smaller companies in your area. It may take a bit of legwork on your part, but, unless you have left something out, there should be someone out there that will put you to work. It may not be a gravy job with a new truck, but it will at least get your foot in the door.

What sort of traffic tickets and how many? Suspensions with your license only being reinstated in August of 2006 are not good things. Most companies look 3 - 5 years back.

As far as the gaps in your employment history, those should be able to be explained, and you need to explain them.

As much as I hate to suggest this co. To get your experience tho, because of your Location, try VanPak out of Springfield,Mass but do try not to get conned into a LeasePurchase program ! Do not get friendly or tell your business to others,do your job the best you can, ask questions if you need to properly do it, and get your experience. Good luck

I'm having trouble finding a job too, I graduated from 280 hour CDL class A on September 17th, I went down to May Trucking a week later and I couldn't pass their backing test, so I went on to try other companies and they're all telling me "sorry you have to have 4 months to 1 year minimum experience." Do they somehow have the information on me about what happened at May and now won't give me a chance? I went back to the school and did 2 days of 1 on 1 training with their lead instructor so I'm sure I could pass the test now, May told me I needed 6 months experience now too. I don't have any tickets, dui, felonies, misdemenors or anything, the only bad thing on my record may have been that I was fired from a couple jobs unrelated to driving. Has to much time passed since I got my CDL and now no one will consider me?

Probably not a case of too much time or that May is saying anything. Check the threads in here about companies, and check their websites for their requirements. Some companies are changing their requirements lately due to the tight economy, which is making it harder for rookies to get on somewhere. Perhaps try Roehl. It's good that you were able to go back to your school for more backing work. That is always the hardest thing to get the hang of.

This thread and others like it should be a warning to others that graduating a CDL school does not automatically qualify you for a job , especially if you have issues with your MVR . The schools just want your money and have no interest in your future once you're out the door . Before contracting with a school talk to recruiters at prospective carriers , maybe even sending them a copy of your MVR before you go to school .

I think it's unconscionable, if not unethical for both the licensing entity and the truck driving school to allow a potential CDL driver to apply for a license without at least informing them that their license will be worthless until "xxx" falls off your record in "xxx" amount of time.

Sure, there are consequences for our actions. But if a person is trying to better themselves, they deserve a hand up rather than a setup.

Something else wannabes better realize is things are not the same as they were a couple of years ago . You used to be able to start out with a training company and move on to a decent carrier if you stuck it out for a year or two . Now so many companies are going out of business there are too many experienced drivers out there competing for jobs . You might be stuck with your original employer for quite a while longer than expected .

The only problem is the person would have to contact the department of higher education in the state were the school they went to is located and they will be whipped into shape quick.

I had a problem with a trucking school that is no longer in busniess probaly because they cheated alot of others like they did me.\
I contacted the department of higher education at first they were reluctant to help but I conviced them to look into it and I got my money back that was paid to that school.

The school's name was M.T.A. that was back in the mid 90's
