I just downloaded and have learned lot about Copilot live laptop, but I can't figure out how to resume travel along a saved route. With my Garmin, I can turn it off and then return, and it will automatically assume continued routing to a destination. With copilot, I create and edit a route, but when I finally press Go it assumes that I want to route to the beginning of my edited route. This typically means that it wants to take the next offramp, make a u-turn, and return from where I've come. I need to keep routes saved and not so modified. Can somebody explain how to get co-pilot to resume an itinerary already in progress?

Gee, this sounds suspiciously like the 45 minute conversation that I just completed on the last support call. :biggrin_2559: So if you're NOT the same guy then we're witnessing a cosmic occurance in the space-time continoum and you need to call me when you get stopped (if you got the program from us.)

However, I wanted to post a reply here for the other members anyway.

The CPT ver 8 will of course continue a route where you left off. So we got that straightened out on the functionality.

However, because we got to root thing that you were trying to do at the time, I see the definite need for the ability to leave any additional stops (i.e. fuel stops, etc) to STAY in the total trip in the "planning mode" so that once the trip is finished you would have record of the actual places you went along the way afterwards without manually resaving the trip each time. Thanks for that suggestion - I will send it in to ALK on my next report to them.

    Don,

That was probably me, and you are right Co-pilot laptop automatically continues the trip. But, it might be helpful if it told me so because I want to make certain my state mileage numbers also continue--another problem I just discovered.

For instance, my automobile Garmin confirms resumption of a trip with a text message, and the voice says "recalculating" when one drives off the planned route. Co-pilot doesn't specifically confirm either of these, so a driver can leave the planned route without knowing it.

So, on my trip west, Co-pilot routing and map appeared to resume daily as the mapping remained consistent. But, at the end of the trip, the mileage for the entire states of Wyoming and Utah were missing for the days traveled in these state--within the calendared state mileage feature.

Retaining a record of routes traveled and mileages, both by day and by state, is central for an owner-operator's navigator, but unfortunately, no navigator on the market covers these needs yet.

It is my understanding that it records the mileage as long as it is turned on and has a GPS signal. So why it would omit mileage that you drove in Wyoming and Utah is unknown. I'll ask the developers if they have seen any bugs on mileage logging.

As far as the "recalculation" of a route if you miss a turn, one of the primary complaints by drivers who own the windshield-mounted devices is that "it takes too long" to recalculate and "I need to see my next turn immediately as I am driving along the city blocks."

So since the CPT8 recalculates a new route pretty much instantly, what would like to see it do again? Basically you want the voice to say something like "route has been recalculated" when you do not take the prescribed turn? Is that correct?

You understand the situation well, Don, so I hope the Co-pilot engineers are reading this.

The voice guidance system for me is mostly a reminder. It ensures that I actually take the turn I'm supposed to at the time I'm supposed to, and it let me know when I've deviated away from the route. Co-pilot is weak on both counts.

As for the state mileage record, this needs to be pretty much fool proof. After simple point to point navigation, IFTA mileage recording is basic to any truck navigator, so I don't understand why these records based on the actual "breadcrumb" data aren't more durable.

Even if the navigator or gps device get turned off, the unit ought to calculate the mileage for fill-in. Maybe I lost satellite signal in Wyoming for some reason, and so it simply stopped counting miles? The breadcrumb ought to fill-in gps gaps. In some cases this mileage fill-in won't be perfect, but it would be very close to reality.

Then, there ought to be an editing feature that allows everything to accommodate and shift accordingly. So, for example after the mileage fill-in described above, my odometer math allows me to correct a particular state's mileage, perhaps due to circling around a distribution center or around town driving, all the state mileages AFTER that ought to accept the edit and adjust calculations to continue the effort.

Well said, and I agree entirely with your post except for the first paragraph which I don't fully understand. This is the first edition where they added state mileage recording and it is a basis to launch more "editable" and versatile functionality to that aspect. The things you mentioned above and several other items (like extracting to a spreadsheet and other importable formats) has been fed back as needed enhancements to the mileage logging module in the program.

OK, thanks for the reply Don. But, where are the co-pilot engineers? Don't they read the forums?

In addition to using the voice guidance as a feedback loop for the driver, providing certainty about directions in process, I do see a number of ergonomic weaknesses this software.

A few examples: Slider bars are too narrow to easily grab with the pointer arrow, and the "compass" fonts are too fine lined. There are also some menus that have a white background as default, which is really blinding at night. Rather than navigating through countless menus, having a toolbar on the map, with icons sizable enough to easily click would be better...

Lol. Yes, they read forums. I'm still lost on your "voice guidance" comment. Do you mean "voice recognition" like version 9 had where you can ask it certain phrases like "where am I" and "how far?" Because it does voice "navigation" now.

I agree with the scrolling philosophy and that has been on the feedback list since early on. Lots of users want to see that improved. I did not know about the "white background issue on menus" but I can see where there could be some improvement there.

    Thanks.

No, not voice recognition. I don't want that because I'm certain the engineers at Co-pilot aren't able to do that one right. Besides, the ambient noise of the truck mitigates against it. Voice guidance, or voice navigation if that the term specific to the navigator industry, involves a much less sophisticated programming with a human like voice that guides the user. Yes, this part needs to become more sophisticated in the Co-pilot software. They can use Garmin's products as a good starting point for voice navigation.

Also, I've been playing with this program quite a bit lately, and I do like the basic route planning software, which allows state mileage based upon a pre-determined route that is already "saved". I hope there's infinite memory space, or at least as large as my hard drive will allow, for storage of these trips. I've been recreating my actual trips to get the best mileage estimates I can get. I still should be able to have back-up storage of all actual routes as well though--not just bread crumb on map images--but actual data I can use for my business.

Back to the ergonomics of the software. I recommend a reorganization of the page layout. The text turn-by turn menu system is on the right hand quarter side of the main map (not the so-called safety version that obscures the map) but the menus pop-up and obscure the map on the left side of the screen. I'd rather have the text obscure the text, so the menu's could be better organized in terms of space and shifted to the right side of the map. Frankly, I like a sizable map of my route always available, and find this safer than the text turn instructions. The text instructions are useful for anticipating the next turns, and should be default for the right side of the screen.

Even so, there's a lot of wasted background space there. To fill-in, and reduce the extensive menus, icon buttons for other tasks could float in a submenu box below. Navigating through menus with arrow buttons is a time consuming hassle that should be avoided whenever possible, IHMO. If I can locate and click on an icon, one that is easy to see and psychologically meaningful to the task at hand (like a picture of a "trash can" to "delete" something is on a Mac, or a "spinning clock dial" is to "time"), that right-hand side of the screen can produce pop-up information on the right side of the screen, providing an opportunity to adjust a setting while the map stays mostly the same.

But, the map can have floating icons too. I'd like to see a speed limit sign posted to remind me of the legal speed limit, for example, right next to another showing my actual speed. This information can float over the corners of the map...

I'm still lost on the voice navigation improvement. So, currently it will say things like "In one mile take a right on Johnson Street." I have several Garmins also. What additional things would you like to see added to the voice feature?

As far as the rest, I have noted your suggestions accordingly.

    Thanks.
