I have 9 months over-the-road trucking experience (all nine months were basically teaming experience) and have a choice of doing solo intermodal trucking or solo dry van.

Would anybody out there tell me if my experience is enough experience to do intermodal or should I stick with a solo dry van position? Thanks for your opinions

Each type of trailer you pull, scales different, backs different, corners different.
The geographical area in which you drive is very important as well. Open road with country type scenery and laidback driving opposed to city - fied hecktick nerve racking day.

Intermodal aint too bad. I just don't know how it would be running outa Chicago.

If its a hourly gig then it can't be too bad.

JB Hunt will hire you with 6 months experience. Probably make 50k your first year. Great equipment and benefits. Once you learn the rail yards it is easy work. I ran the Chicago yards for 3 1/2 years. Home 34 - 48 hours every week. Sometimes a load is buried and you spend time moving units to get to it or you have to find a chassis but most of the time you just grab your unit and go. Anytime a motorist complains about a driver the driver is almost always written up. Construction sign said all trucks use left lane and someone called in saying I was impeding traffic. They wanted to write me up.

We run rail yards at my company as well, we use it because its very very cheap. Normally we pick up our pups and vans but at times get a container. I would make sure you check every square inch of that container though and make sure its on there good.

Rail yard for me is fun, well only sundays, normally send the 4 of us out and we all meet at the rail yard after we do the terminals. Every sunday we have to wait 1-3 hours for them to unload the trailers off the train, at times they will do us right away.

If your using Norfolk Southern they will give you a driver code, ad never use your TWIC.

*BEWARE* sometimes they arent where they say they are, and at times you can barely make out on trailer(not just ours, EVERYONES) the numbers, ive seen guys pulls trailers written in Magic marker
