Hi, I am wanting to become a driver for UPS, but I have amblyopia, lazy eye, in one eye. I've had it since I was kid, and as of now it is not able to be corrected by surgery or corrective lenses. My other eye is literally perfect vision. My bad eye has never affected anything that I have done until now. I am not able to pass my DOT because of it. I do not have any prior experience driving company trucks or semis. I have passed the written exam to get my CDL.

Is there any way or possibility for me to get an exemption for my bad eye despite not having prior experience driving? Please let me know!!!

The only way to get a vision waiver to operate in interstate commerce is to have proof you have safely operated commercial vehicles intrastate (local, not leaving your state or hauling interstate cargo) for the past 3 years. This will be tough for you if you have never driven professionally before. You do not need to have had a cdl for the last 3 years, a non-cdl truck driving job can qualify you for the wavier, so long as it was a truck and job that meets the definition of commercial vehicle (usually gross weight greater than 10,001 pounds but some states specify 17,000 pounds or other weights).

Here is a link to the FMCSA waiver information packet, it explains what you need to do to obtain a waiver from the vision standards. I hope this helps. Good luck.
