Addiction is classified as a disease. I have a close relative that went through this and seen first hand how it changes an every day normal honest person into a lying, stealing, conniving person. The point I was trying to make is drugs change a person also some dont choose to become an addict (prescription drugs).

Disease eh? Well Mother Theresa.. there are some "diseases" that have lots of symptoms.. There are "diseases" that have symptoms, there are diseases that while could go into remission, sometimes under certain situations come out of remission.. When you are dealing with 40 tons of articulating vehicles. travelling at 70 MPH or even more in some cases, and up sometimes millions of dollars in equipment, loads and when and if this "disease" reappears and there is an accident causing death or property value, then the company gets to fork over even more millions potentially ending the company's future and the employment of several (hundred or even thousands) of employees. The industry has several sets of rules on several different levels.. but when it comes down to it, It's all about the liability and risk to the company and its employees to even consider hiring a dope head.. Wring your hands, pull your hair out, but in the real world, choices have consequences and all the talks and pleading with people to stay off the dope, they still want to play with it.... until of course they want to act like grownups for a change.. by then of course... its too late.

 

Yep, drugs do that to people.. and the rates of failure and relapse in drug rehab are VERY high... Once you get to that level, a person should NEVER be entrusted with a commercial drivers license let alone a tractor trailer operating on the highways.. The stresses, solitude and environment is NOT exactly conducive to staying clean.

 

You are correct, relapse rate is very high, but the chance of relapse gets smaller the longer you have been drug-free. Everyone has a different opinion. I'm not saying go hire a guy that's fresh out of rehab, but someone who's been clean for years. And to the other people disputing the fact that addictions a disease, I am not the one that classified addiction as a disease. That's what it's known as in the medical world. So if you want to dispute this, take it up with them guys, not me.

 

Hello my best advice to you would be to try second chance company, they can be found on craigslist, indeed.com......try IL, that state is very forgiving of your past.....

 

Then actually learn from the mistake and move on instead of giving a 'poor me' attitude expecting everyone to have sympathy. When you can prove to a court of law that you learned from your past and you are clean, you can get your record expunged. Then, and only then does someone deserve a second chance.

 

And taking a change on a driver relapsing and ending up in court defending your company against your employees past and or present and "taking a chance" ending up in the death of someone (even if not at fault) is something that the "give em a chance" crowd never seems to wrap their skulls around. It's a world of liability and its only getting worse.. taking a chance these days is moronic if there are drivers available who have no criminal drug histories.
