Hi everyone! Let me tell you..this has been a ROUGH first-year!! We just barely made it, had to cut down our fleet, restructure our payments, etc, but here we are still keeping on.

My question: About 4 months ago, we hired an administrator. She did a very good job holding drivers accountable for gas reciepts, days off, etc. She kept great records and helped turned our company around. Because of her, we have an AMAZING set of drivers that I trust and do an excellent job. This is invaluable since in the past, we had drivers that very nearly took down our entire company by stealing fuel, spreading rumors, ganging up on us. However, she had no knowledge of transportation which limited her ability to really help us.

Now, we are looking for someone to replace her since she is moving. We would pay a GREAT salary in return for a person with plenty of knowledge of transportation, ideally with connections!! I want someone who could dispatch but also keep tabs on the drivers. We are down to 7 trucks so the work wouldn't be too difficult. The person would have to know how to use QuickBooks and keep track of expenses/profits. I was thinking a take-home salary of around 60,000 would attract a good candidate.

What do you guys think? Is the salary in the ballpark? Where should I look for candidates?

This year has been the hardest in our lives, thanks largely to being very naive and hiring bad employees. I am so nervous now about new employees. Anyone know of a good place to get started?

    Hey Tiff!

Glad to hear you guys are still kicking. I pm'ed you a while back to see how you were doing and hadn't heard anything. I'd try www.indeed.com - you'll likely find several very good candidates with truckload and transportation management experience. We post job openings there and usually get a decent turnout for candidates. Have you considered placing them on a 1099 and paying them commission based on the number of loads they book and amount of revenue they are bringing in? How far are you from Rockford, IL

I would sell my truck and trailer and do it but I don't want to live in Wisconsin.

hmmm, I'm not saying this to start trouble even though it probably will. But really Tiff, if someone is willing to leave their own business for $60,000 year how good can they really be ?

Another thought occurs to me is that perhaps what would be good for you is to partner up with another trucking company that has good management in place. Either sell them your equipment and invest it back into their company or work out some other deal with them.
