I think you'd need a crane to handle the wheels.....not like a honda car, right ? I also thought about removing wheels from the 3rd axle to soften it up, but, then you have all the ride on 1 axle instead of 2. So, would that be advisable or not ?

Well here is my thoughts on it. Somewhere, somebody is going to be driving that thing on the job. Unless you are making a show truck or something out of it.
So if it is good enough to have somebody driving it on the job, it is probably good enough to drive across country. It may not be fast, it may not be fun. But if you are going to be asking someone else to drive it on the job, get some wheel time in it yourself. -
Flatbeds usually load out at 4'6" so you would have to get the height of the truck down to 9' to be legal. Measure from the ground to the lowest part of the axle to see if it is 2'. This is usually a drive/on drive off situation, I dont forsee a driver waiting for free for you to take the wheels off and waiting again on the other end for you to put them back on.

You're looking at a 53' stepdeck low pro with ramps for ground loading. It can go as a partial and chances are you can probably get a good rate on it since it's going out TO California. I'd just need to get ahold of some of our drivers and see what you'd be looking at and could give you a better answer. Out of CA you're looking in the $4k range. INTO CA and a partial, you should be able to do it much, much cheaper. It all just depends on what the driver can find to go with it.
25'6 long is about the same length as a back hoe and we just quoted one of these coming out of California last week. Partial rate OUT was under $4k, but going in, you'd probably get it quite a bit cheaper.Wesco Thanks this. -

Big Don: Don't worry, I plan to spend a whole lot of time in this baby when I get her home. Only difference is she'll have a 12 yard box, (which will be full of rock half the time) which should soften the suspension up a bit, and we mostly operate on backroads within a 50 miles radius.
Jumbo: Thanks for the info, good point about not making a driver wait around while I dink on it... and I don't think I can get it down to 9'.

where in CA are you goin? i would suggest the south route along 40 then up to whever. might take a bit longer but you wont have to run thru Mckin pass.

As far as buying one out west, I've been looking for a few years and there just aren't many with a decent motor and a real tranny, not in my price range anyhow. The ISM may not be a real OTR powerhouse but I think its better than the L10's and 3306's that abound in the 6x6 field. And alot of the old military rigs have great motors but they're married to 15spd Auto's. I just don't want to drive or repair an automatic.
Allow me: I would think that any shop with a forklift could manage the wheels (although at home we do use our crane truck), also at least with the hendrickson I don't think taking the wheels off of one axle would work at all, but thanks for helping me brainstorm.
I did get a lowball quote from a fella who said he could get it on a flatbed if I got it down to 10'6" which is only 6" shorter than it is... what do y'all think about letting almost all the air out of the tires? The tires need to be replaced soon anyhow, but I sure would like to be able to recap em...
& before you all start calling me yellow, I'm still probably driving it out myself, but I finally did get behind the wheel and DANG thats a rough ride!... Exactly how many bumps are there between Ohio and California? Seriously I mean, if I go the 70 to the 80, (or the 80 all the way) how much of the freeway is smooth?
