First how much do you think the brokers are making off you per load?
Second, most shippers don't want to deal with one guy with one truck. They would rather make one call or send one email to a broker and be done with it, not call 50 people trying to get a load covered. Not that you can't get hooked up directly with a shipper but it would be rare. You could just get your brokers license. We have one but to tell you the truth it's not worth the hassle. You spend any amount of time on the phone dealing with truck drivers and you'll figure out why brokers are the way they are. That's why we really don't use ours anymore. You might make $100 on a load but it takes 5 phone calls and a bunch of paperwork so IMO it's not worth it. -
i already know they profit from $50 to $1000 or more per load but do really think they are going to give you the extra money after they meet their quotas..... hell naw idk how much they keep its my money so i want it all. Besides i'm the one doing all the work, taking all the risks, but i'm suppose to share my money with some person sitting behind a freakn desk. Yeah right
i know it would be easier for the shipper to make 1 phne call but, i'm not looking for the heavy hitters. i'm talking about the smaller mom and pop companies that aren't to familiar with the game or just don't wanna waist time with dealing with the stupid brokers. -
Dont believe what you here that shippers wont use smaller companys, 99% of my freight comes from direct shippers and i only run 2 trucks now, most are glad to use you at least on the flatbed side, i also know one truck guys that run for Coke, Pepsi and other big companys. Quite a few of my shippers have stopped using brokers in the last few years because the brokers could never get it moved for the cut throat rate they tried to move it for or the guy they sent in was a total ediot with junk equitment. I just got a big account from a direct shipper because the big outfit they where using was never on time at either end. You dont need a salemen if you have some time to go out and sell yourself but if you can afford it it would not hurt.

I haven't bought a truck yet, and true it might help that I am a deputy sheriff, but I have gone to the plant managers in the area I lived and asked them if I bought a truck and trailer could I haul for them, each time the answer has been yes. What's the worst they could tell me,no? It never hurts to ask, plus I have a lot of ink and a fresh ticket book if the answer is no
Saddle Tramp Thanks this. -
There's several companies in Kingman, Az. that ship their product with single O/O's and large carriers. Large doesn't necessarily mean good service. An O/O that services the same customer on a regular basis knows that he must give good service or get booted out.
-
My son picked up deal a few months ago when another carrier went belly up. The company said they would give him every load they shipped to the east coast where his driver likes to run (don't ask me why)...
Went good for two months... now Landstar comes in and undercuts my son's rate by $1,000.00... so my kid is now hustling to find another shipper. But he will get the freight back when Landstar can't get anyone to deadhead 300 miles to the U.P. of Michigan to haul for a cheap rate.
Same thing happened to me 25 years ago when I was in the classic car hauling biz... -
So here are the numbers for running 50,000 miles in 20 weeks or 6mnths...
I would love to run more but from the look of things that's not gonna happen.
Avg. 2,500 miles per week (per person)* $1.30 per mile = $3,250 weekly
Avg. $3,250 wkly. * 20 weeks = $65,000
You have to run for no less than $1.36 cpm and 2500 mpw =( $68,000) to break even with fuel surcharge.!!!!!!!!!
Total Gross Revenue - $65,000 dollars in 20 wks.
1. Insurance $10k per year - (6 mths@ $500 mth.) - $5,000 (rates high)
2. n/a
3. Fuel - $2.50cpg / 6.0mpg =$.386 # 2500mpw = $962. - $19,240
4. Fuel Surcharge avg. - $1.10, difference of $1.40cpg / 6.0mpg = $.184 # 2500mpw = $458 weekly, 20wks. = $9,160. Difference of $10,080.
5. (10% deadhead 200 miles wk. * $1.30cpm) = $260wk * 20wks. - $5,200
6. Permits/Auth. - (est. $125 wk. * 20wks) - $2,500
7. n/a
8. Maintenance ($.10 cpm@ 2500 miles a week= $250wk) - $5,000
9. Salary - (2500 miles # $.50 cpm -$1250) - $25,000
10. Trailer fuel avg. 15 gallons (day)# $2.50= $37.50, $187.50 (weekly)- $3,750
11. Reefer Maintenance - $.025 cpm@ 2500 (miles a week = $62.50) - $1,250
12. Tire maintenance - $0.02 cpm # 2500 (miles a week=$50) - $1,000
13. Taxes 20% of gross income #$3,250 # quarter - $6,500
14. Break-down time - $3,250 a wk.) 1 wk out of every 20wks. = $3,250
Total Expenses -$77,690 in 20 weeks
-$67,610 in 20 weeks with fuel surcharge.
Can you please take a look at these numbers and tell me what you think, i'm trying to put my business plan together b4 i hit the road so i can have some what of a goal and a guideline to stick by. Any info. will be helpful thanks......
