So im new to kenworth but I really like the w900. Im looking for a 18 speed or 13 but when it comes to engine im not sure. Its going to be an older truck 2000 1990s pre egr. My options are Detroit, cat, cummins. I would like it to be fuel friendly not looking for any drag races. My question is do long nose trucks suffer alot from aerodynamics? Any input is appreciated thanks

Your right foot controls fuel mileage more than anything else !!! My W900, E-model Cat Dynos 704hp to the ground, 15 speed trans, 3.55 rears on 24.5 Lo-pro tires pulling a step, IFTA quarterly fuel mileage is 7.54 mpg. I pull mostly legal-sized loads, with a occasional oversized to 14 foot wide. Most loads weight 35 to 40K.

Well maybe I should have said its going to be for heavy haul grain. 78k to 95k gross looking for 500 hp engines.

I would get a CAT if it were me. Nothing against the other 2 just prefer CAT. In the end its gonna come down to how the previous owners took care of it regardless of engine manufacturer. Being that heavy most of the time you will appreciate the torque of a CAT.

Strictly for a reference I drive a 2010 w900, has ISX Cummings 500HP strictly factory, 13 speed 355 rears 24.5 rubber. run 42k t0 44k. I usually run 5 over the limit The onboard computer usually says 5.5 mpg. Not that good to me. I hear the on board computer is usually some low on mpg. Also the truck only has 110,000 mi on it. I pull 48 ft 13 ft high dry van.

I have heard the same thing terrible in fuel, but personally don't think they are much worse than the rest. A lot of it is driver of course, what I mean is you take a guy that has run series 60 or cummins last few years he isn't gonna get best mpg right off. Some of it has to do with the engine may have a small issue that doesn't set codes and shops say oh nothing wrong and owner throws piles of performance money at it helps power but not fuel millage. I also think that you can have 2 side by side just like they were sent new and one may do a little better for unknown reasons. I have worked on heavy equip a long time and naturally get a few lowboy trucks since they are there. Most are CAT must be something to that. I have also made a habit of checking lifetime fuel millage of every truck I hook my diagnostic equip to, there isn't that much difference at all. When I decided to truck full time and hire shop help CATS is what we bought. Got a 19 year old son in a 2000 model 379 with a 1MM C16 600HP 3.36 rears and 18speed pulls a grain wagon in state last quarter had a 5.5 mpg avg. Thats not bad for 80000 gross all the time.

My avg for 93k gross half the miles empty half loaded are around 5.5 and that is on a volvo with isx 13sp. So a w900 would be around the same fuel consumption.

I say cat too, good torque can get decent mpg with a couple tweaks, at least an ecm tune, if it has a crappy stock ecm program you wont be diggin it but that would b an easy inexpensive fix.
2nd choice would b one with a ddec 4 detroit and have rebel tune ecm, but i rarely see one with that motor
if ur always loaded heavy with lots of stop and go i bet mid 5's is bout all youll get regardless of motor -
Then I think im going with a cat that engine sound is like sex.
