Hello thanks for letting me join. i run a small one man classic car hauling business over the last three and a half years non CDL with a dually.
I'm getting overwhelmed with requests so I'm breaking down getting my CDL and going to a single axle semi and a 44 ft four car enclosed stacker.
This truck will be used around town and on the highway.

Trailer and cargo we'll be about 30000 pounds max.
To still be able to get a lot of the places that I go, l'm looking at cab overs and short sleeper trucks.

pre-2000 trucks what will have plenty of power for what I need and what should I stay away from?

thanks in advance for any input

When you say ‘around town and on the highway’, what exactly do mean by the ‘on the highway’ part? Just overnight, then back home? Away from home week(s) at a time?

If you really wanna match your classic cars that your be hauling, look for a Ford C7000, or C8000. You will garner nearly as much conversation on that, then you will the cars.

Single axles are kinda rare. Not a huge deal to take a diff out of a tandem and shorten up the frame. Will open up a lot more purchase options.

Hi, and welcome aboard. Overwhelmed, you say? I belong to a classic car site when not here, and it's page after page of people trying to unload family heirlooms now that they have died. Since prices have gotten out of hand, I'd have to think you're in the right business. I say, like AModel, go with a tandem. Single axles used primarily by freight companies, are pretty shot, and a tandem just makes more sense, and a better deal. 4-500K, engine needs rebuild, 5-750K, electrical, and so on, you really can't win today. Best bet there, is buy a fleet truck with a newer motor, and deal with the rest as it happens. Generally, fleet trucks are somewhat maintained, and can be bought right. Good luck, you can't go wrong with a FL.

    Concorde Thanks this.

I've actually been considering that truck, but somebody that is a vintage semi rebuilder that's been advising and
guiding me along in this process says wouldn't be happy with the motor that truck.
