3rd that. The antifreeze is just that. It prevents freezing. The less glycol the better the cooling. Only issue with straight water is rust and freezing. I run a 60/40 mix in my pickup because of how far north I am but it definitely makes a noticeable difference in temps when I work it hard in hot weather.
help me on this one cooling issue

Agree on water cooling better, and again tap water contains minerals that can help corrode aluminum parts.
The red antifreeze doesnt say extended life, mine says ethol glycol, which is the same as original coolant.
In my cars,I always remove extended life antifreeze, flush, and replace with ethol glycol. -
o.k. well I put 3 gal green antifreez the rest tap, just to see how it does. did not want to buy distilled water then dump it out a week later. if this flush works, I'll take out the tap, but I do think the shop will have truck next week, though I hope not

off today, but got a load to leave out about 1 a.m. this nice cool night should tell me something. 1 thing I did notice is my fuel temp code just started to come up. I wonder if that has anything to do with the head getting hot & sort of cooking the fuel? oh' and after thinking a while I called the shop, that put the new thermostats in... The first time it ran hotter than normal, I took it right in to have them put in, anyway called the shop & they drained my coolant in a ole oil pan they use to drain out old oil, they wiped it out, but I guess that may be where the debris came from. after looking at all my coolant sys drain, it looked real real clean. so I think I was more paranoid than anything else. but I do think I have a issue with the head, or water pump, we will see. thanks for all the advice. will keep updated

Distilled water, at WalMart, 88 cents a gallon. Not a bad price, when you look at the possible consequences.
EDIT:
Oh I do have a question here. Doesn't anti-freeze/coolant, have a lot higher boiling point than water? And if it does, then isn't running a mix much better than just water? Particularly down here in the desert? -
Yes it does raise the boiling point and it doe have corrosion inhibitors.
It really is needed for sure.
We were just stating a point that straight water does cool better. Having said that i would never run just straight water all the time.Big Don, BoxCarKidd and Oxbow Thank this. -
inconclusive results! went out on the road. truck did a lot better, but only cause it was 50 degrees when I left out at 1:00 a.m. instead of the usual 75, also weather was 30 degrees cooler on my way back. going to watch everything close. whatever it is,I hope it is obvious. just serviced my truck yesterday, sent oil sample out today. in a week those lab reports may tell me something. still not sure if I am still getting coolant in the oil or not. the last oil sample I was.

Had a chevy truck that got real hot. It warped the head just enough that hot gases would force themselves into cooling system and cause the coolant to look murky after some time. I did put another 30K on it.

Well coolant temp is back to normal. We had 2 day's of upper 80's weather to test further. Compared to the last week/10 days up hill, idle heavy,/ light loads, e.t.c temp is o.k. now. I'm not sure why. The only thing I did was flush the system, did not see anything of concern in old coolant.
One thing I did differently is put 4 gal antifreeze and 7 gal water. Before I had 7 gal coolant and 4. Gal water. The lower ratio of coolant seems to cool better. Not sure what to credit for the change back to normal? Maybe the members on here with their advice just scared my truck back into obedience? .
Since this test run is done I will drain system , since it has tap water in it and put the pencool in, plus distilled water along with coolant.
Thanks for all the info, you all were very helpful. -
my w.p. gave out on me. the impellar was not turning. looks like it had been slipping for quite a while, but not all the time. looks like this was my cooling prob, after a tow & new w.p. everything looks good, never had1 on a ser 60 detroit go bad this way, I know cats are common for this type of failure.
Rideandrepair, mc8541ss and BoxCarKidd Thank this.
