I just started my career and went into teaming. I'm barely sleeping, maybe a few hours. The problem isn't the bumps waking me up or "the fear" but instead I just feel wide awake the moment I try to sleep. Sometimes I drift off just fine and sleep through most of my teammates driving, but mostly I just lay... and lay... and lay some more... and my mind wanders about all my financial issues and sick mom and miss my best friend (he's a cat) and then my shift comes and I'm exhausted, frankly a statistical danger behind the wheel but I'm very good at driving in my sleep so don't worry.

I think a lot of it has to do with me choosing 12AM-12PM shift and melatonin and carcadian rhythm blah blah but for now it'd be rude to inconvenience my partner when he let me be the one to decide. After our hometime I'll have us switch schedules.

For now though, any over the counter pills that might help without much side effects? General tips? I don't drink much coffee, maybe once a week, and not much soda either.

Edit: Nothing with Diphenhydramine (benadryl, etc) will work, I have a paradoxical reaction to it that makes it like meth to me.

Friend of mine uses Nyquil. I tried it and it works well. Tried some other similar brands from Walmart and they work just as well. It's liquid, so goes to the system fast.

Unfortunately those and the Walmart brand use Diphenhydramine. I think what I might need is something herbal and natural. I don't have a way to heat water or else I'd be using some herbal teas.

Try reading and listening to ambient music. I put on the sound of running river water and it helps me ease into sleep for some reason.

Ok I use melatonin. It doesn't give me 8 hours but it gets me started on a solid 4-5 hours. I also know what you tube videos help me get sleepy. I like gaming videos and Los Angeles police pursuits. I get sleepy 10 mins later. Melatonin will leave you groggy in the AM but it goes away.
